  1. This is brilliant ! Very easy to introduce and use. So many of us spend so much time focusing on external relationships that we forget about the relationship we have we ourselves. Building a supportive, nurturing relationship with ourselves is key to bringing around sustained change. I see this as an ongoing lifetime commitment. With this in place and attended to regularly, I believe you will have the strength of character to be able to navigate life’s pains and pleasures. This is an idea that I see really works. Thank you for sharing.

I have found your articles on character disturbances profoundly helpful as a social worker who works w/a very diverse population including ex-offenders, participants in the welfare-to-work & food stamp programs, the chronically unemployed/underemployed, homeless, etc etc etc. Character disturbances are very often at the foundation of their troubled lives. Years ago I began focusing on the idea of helping people change destructive behavior instead of mucking through therapy to figure out why they were doing what they were doing. My clients simply do not have time to do that. Getting it down to a 4-step process is really helpful. They of course often have to be helped to understand what behaviors are their culprits, as very often they really don’t get what is glaringly obvious to everyone else. But once they realize that when they think/do “this,” then “that” happens, they are pretty much on their way as long as they are willing to do the hard work of changing those things. This is a very good tool in making that a bit easier for them.

    1. Thank you, Marta. The validation means a lot. When I first started working with folks with character issues, I was pretty frustrated until I realized it was the approach that was wrong. Once I found tools appropriate to the problem, the work became a lot easier. That’s not to say character issues are easy to deal with, but they’re darned near impossible to ameliorate using traditional paradigms and techniques. I hope you find these tools helpful.
