One Comment on “Let’s Hear It for the Girl!”

  1. Footloose has always been one of my favorite movies (child of the 80s and all that), and I enjoyed the remake, although I agree with you that it wasn’t really necessary.

You brought up some points about Ariel’s character that I didn’t even think about, especially about knowing more about her so that we could care about her as a person rather than just an extension to Ren’s journey. Of course, one could argue that the journey we were watching was Ren’s so it would naturally focus on him more than others. But there are plenty of other movies out there that accomplish a look into a journey like Ren’s.

We should be able to “hear it for the girl” much more in movies … and not just in these raunchy rom-coms that seem to be all the rage. This movie would have been a great opportunity for such an exploration into grief, recovery and character growth.

Instead, it was just a remake.
