Although the counselling centre where I work does not allow employees to bring in their pets, I have had many clients who are helped by bringing their dogs to an individual session or a group. The most unusual sessions were when a client brought her squirrel along. As an animal-lover (6 cats) I have always enjoyed having animals in the workplace and at home. They are a blessing to our lives.
“Not everything therapeutic is therapy”.
I too have found that people are more willing to talk to me when I’ve been taking a dog for a walk.
Hi Sacha and Evan
How amazing, Sacha, to have a squirrel in the room! I agree that animals are a blessing – the relationship that it’s possible to have with animals is definitely therapeutic. Evan, where I take Chester for a walk, there’s a good sense of community amongst the dog-walkers — when one of us, an elderly lady, hadn’t been seen for a few days, it was noticed by the dog-walkers and we were able to check out that she was OK. Fortunately, she was.
Thank you for your post. In 2008 I welcomed my first furry friend into my life. A year later we added another to our family. My partner and I do not have any children and the addition of these two lovely felines into our life has been a healing experience. As a therapist myself I can attest to the healing relationships animals can provide. I have heard quite a bit about animal assisted therapy and I am particularly curious about the work people are doing with horses. I colleague of mine uses labradors to help children with communication impairments with great success.
