  1. Fitness to practice is imperative and this is what personal development enables. I think that within the subject area of counselling and psychotherapy, it is easy to become somewhat carried away with theory and debates on such. This article really does remind us (as practitioners) that the therapeutic process is only as effective as the relationship between client and counsellor. Before each session I think that we could as practitioners acknowledge – “What am I bringing into the room?”

    1. Hi Kate, thanks for your message. I absolutely agree with you that the relationship is vital, and that taking a moment or two to reflect on ‘what am I bringing into the room’ can make all the difference to that therapy session. When a bit of my ‘stuff’ gets triggered by something the client says or does, I experience it almost as if I’m tripping over an obstacle in an otherwise relatively smooth road, and so the more work I can do to learn where those potential obstacles are — before they come into the therapy room — the better!
