Research Library

Our research library of resources in counselling and psychotherapy includes in-depth book reviews, an annotated bibliography of books and articles, a guide to other resources on the web, and summaries of the latest news headlines in psychology and mental health. Clinical trials and mental health medications research is also available separately, in the Medications Center.

Book Reviews

Covering books intended both for mental professionals and for consumers, our dedicated book reviews section includes books in counselling, psychotherapy, psychology and related fields. The 'First Impressions' section offers brief overviews and initial impressions of recently published books, while the 'Critical Engagements' section provides more in-depth reviews and discussions.

We have a backlog of several dozen books awaiting review, so if the title you're looking for isn't listed yet, be sure to check back regularly. And if you're a mental health professional interested in reviewing titles, please get in touch and let us know a bit about yourself and your book interests.

Annotated Bibliography

A mainstay of our resources when CounsellingResource.com was first being developed in 2002, the annotated research bibliography has now grown to include many hundreds of entries summarizing important books and articles from across the field. The bibliography has grown to be so extensive that we now just provide an index to it, while the main collection itself now occupies around 100 pages at its own site, CounsellingBooks.com.

Counselling and Psychotherapy Resources on the Web: Your Guide

You might have noticed that the web is a pretty big place, and anyone who claims to provide a complete and comprehensive guide to the resources available in a particular area is probably trying to sell you something. We're not trying to sell you something, but we hope you'll find something useful in our small collection of mental health resources available elsewhere on the web. And unlike some large directories that use automated systems to enable webmasters to submit their sites -- which we're then told will be 'professionally reviewed' (uh huh) -- every site in our list has been personally visited and evaluated. What you read about a site is not what the site owner submitted on a form or a reciprocal link request: it's my own personal assessment of the site.

Psychology and Mental Health News

And finally, we also aggregate announcements from several leading sources over at our Daily Mental Health News page. What you'll find there is a minimalist approach to aggregation, so you can tell at a glance if any particular item is something you'd like to follow up in more detail with a click through to the original source. What you won't find is the sort of republishing -- aka 'blog lifting' --that we see on so many other sites, where a site owner sets up blog software to grab content from other sources' news feeds and automatically republishes it to look like they've actually personally reviewed it or even written it. (If you're lucky, a republishing blog might provide you with a link to the original news source, but the less honest blogs will strip details out of the link so you only get a pointer to the originating website rather than to the specific article on the site; the worst offenders don't provide any link at all.)

...And in Other Sections

For the latest research literature on medications commonly used in mental health, including clinical trials research into drug safety and efficacy, be sure to check the Clinical Trials and Research section of our Medications Centre.
