A generator the size of a pocket watch is implanted into the chest, and wires snake up the neck to the vagus nerve, delivering tiny electric shocks through that nerve and into a region of the brain thought to play a role in mood.

This follows the UK charity’s activities during Mental Health Action Week 2005, which included the launch of a year-long campaign calling for patients with depression to be offered exercise on prescription.
