Bless you also, Richard. Indeed, I hope Rogers did not die for nothing. He gave a valuable gift for understanding and intervening with the troubled, neurotic soul. Increasingly over the years, my work has been dedicated to assisting those for whom the well-intentioned metaphors of the classical models proved not only insufficient but potentially destructive. Rogers was a remarkable person. So was Freud, Adler, Sullivan, etc. To deify them, to blindly accept that their perspectives are without deficiency, or to presume that certain characters don't require a very different type of approach is, I think to be more than narrow-minded but also disregarding of our unique human needs.

Come on!!!

Moses poor belighted soul was very disturbed, sermon on the mount .

Dr George Simon what a way to carry ,on 10 codes ot whatever what would Carl Rogers think , did he die for nothing ?

I thougt the cult of the expert was dead and buried! How wrong i was .

I am applalled by this intellectual approach to what can only be lived ( yes Passive aggression to take one examle is pyschoanalytically speaking a very common dynamic , we all suffer from at various time and too various degrees), and this other variant I have never heard of sounds slightly pyschopathic but the answer doesn't lie in more control.

That is exactly what pyschopaths do! ( re your'e example of the cat who is i am sure very gratefull that he has managed to pounce on the mouse and kill it . )

It lies in aknowledging and accessing our feelings!!

Come on Mr Psychologist get real, aghh and stop trying to tell others how to behave please ........

God Bless Richard

Hi, Stephen. I think you missed the main point of the reference. It was given as an analogy only, not a testimonial. I certainly hope you find the main principles advanced in the post both "respectable" and "helpful."

'...they faced the even bigger challenge of surrendering their wills to that higher purpose (as emphasized in one of the “12 steps” of Alcoholics Anonymous).' As a counsellor for alcoholics I've found the entire structure of AA indistinguishable from a cult. AA is a white male, Judaeo-Christian construct that exploits a chemical dependency by misleading people that they are powerless against an addiction which was caused by losing their connection with a 'Higher Power.' It has the victim deny their own personal responsibility for their addiction, and takes advantage of it by using it as a basis from which to proseletyze and indoctrinate religious dogma. It disempowers, harms and is ineffective. I urge the interested reader to the Baldwin Institute's research.

I fail to see how reference to this sect has any place in this otherwise respectable and helpful site.
