thank you - that's useful for me. If I can start looking at in the terms you discuss... as in debasing a precious commodity.. that will help me in the future. Even if I don't think of myself a bit more to begin with, if I start with some steps it should help me to learn to ignore my guilt (and it will appeal to my neurotic nature if I think I'm also doing a dis-service to society in general!).

Hi, Ellie. I was thinking about how to better explain my comment but then I realized that I couldn't possibly explain it better that the example you just gave! We neurotics are always quick to feel sorry for others, to give them the benefit of the doubt, and to give freely. The problem is that there are those people out there who don't feel any obligation to earn and who latch onto those who give like parasites. We debase the value of life's most precious commodities when we shower them upon those unwilling to earn them.

Hello Dr Simon,

Could you explain what you mean by this:

"Oh, and to all you neurotics out there: Please quit giving away all the really valuable things you’ve managed to earn. It diminishes their value and undermines the character development of our children."

I've often gone out with personality disordered people, so fairly sure I'm neurotic. As an example, I let one move in with me for 3 weeks as I felt it was the "right thing to do" when he was homeless. Despite finding him scary. He then drove me mad and we finally split up. I'd like to move on and stop this behaviour for the future, so I'm interested in your articles. And I'd like to say a big thank you in particular for your article on not accepting any excuse for bad behaviour... really helped me.

Thank you, Diane for the comment. I'm glad you found the quote inspirational. I'm afraid I'm guilty of forgetting how fortunate I am far too often. Then I get stuck in the rut of feeling oppressed and burdened by life and don't feel very giving. It's only when I remember to count my blessings and renew my sense of awe and wonder that I get back on track.

Hi George!
Strive to be truly grateful for the many gifts you’ve been given. Regard life and the miracle of creation with appropriate awe and appreciation. Gratitude will enable you to develop an appropriate sense of indebtedness and obligation to value, preserve, and promote life and to respect all aspects of creation. (Disturbances of Character, Chapter 4)

This quote is truly a inspiration and has so much quality of the sanctity of life within it's message! Gratefulness brings into light so much we have each and everyday.
