New Bipolar Blog by Fink and Kraynak
Psychiatrist Candida Fink and freelance author Joe Kraynak, co-authors of ‘Bipolar Disorder for Dummies’, have launched a new blog at Dr Fink’s site. They share self-help tips, treatment strategies, and more. It’s well worth a visit if you or someone you love has been affected by bipolar disorder.
A few years ago, we covered the release of Bipolar Disorder for Dummies (see “New Book: Bipolar Disorder for Dummies”). Now, the same two authors have launched a blog specifically focused on bipolar disorder; you can visit it at psychiatrist Candida Fink’s site.
Some recent gems include Strategies for Treating Bipolar Despression and Bipolar Disorder Self-Help Tips. A few of the latter include:
- Take ownership of your illness.
- Take your medications as prescribed.
- Don’t drink alcohol.
- Sleep seven to eight hours per night…every night.
- Steer clear of stimulants.

There’s a huge number of bipolar disorder blogs out there, but many of them are simply trying to cash in on demand for information specifically about bipolar disorder. Some are chock full of advertisements and contain little if any original (or worthwhile) material. This one is refreshingly different in that it actually has something to say, and it comes from the perspective of an experienced psychiatrist specializing in bipolar disorder and a talented freelance writer who, perhaps not coincidentally, has his own experience of bipolar disorder: his wife was diagnosed with bipolar in 1999, and he shares his experiences both in the book and the blog.
If you or someone you love has been affected by bipolar disorder, I think the blog is worth a look.

I have heard there is a diet that will help with bi-polar symptoms. Do you know anything about this and where I can get information

Re: Diet for helping with Bi-polar symptoms. I am a little new at this, my son was diagnosed 9 months ago. The more I read about ‘brain foods’, the more I can see that good health, meditation, putting stress to rest all help with bi-polar symptoms. Vitamin E, B, C are particularly good as is fish, fresh fruits & vegetables. Our personal experience over-laps with PST, but living a healthy lifestyle goes a long way to helping relieve bi-polar mania. Keeping a relaxing atmosphere definitely helps as well.

I would like to treat my symptoms naturally but my caregiver doesn’t offer much help in this area. She recommends prescriptions. I read that 5HTP (amino acid) helps with depression. My caregiver says not to take it because it will/could push me to mania. Has anyone tried it? Has anyone had any success with any natural remedies?

this is a bit off the topic of the diet. i have done a bit of research and the way that bipolar is explained seems to explain to an extent what i feel and do most if not all of the time . i an not claiming to be bipolar… but i do think it could be possible. my question is…should a person who suffers bipolar disorder definitely seek treatment? im used to coping with everything internally and alone. and im comfortable with doing it that way.

I found this book about Bipolar Disorder to be very helpful. I have found it helpful to read as many books as possible about this disorder as my daughter has Bipolar 1. Another new book just released I found inspiring and has given me great hope is a new memoir called “I just want my daughter back – coming to terms with Bipolar 1″ by BC Levinson that I found on Amazon.com . Seeing how others cope with bipolar disorder has made a big difference in our journey. It gives hope to those of us walking in these shoes. I actually found the new book through Twitter.com.. you can even chat with the author @BIPOLARSMOM2 . Very nice lady..
Hope this helps

Another great bipolar memoir/self-help book is George’s Denslow’s Living Out of Darkness: A personal journey of embracing the bipolar opportunity. It’s thin and highly readable, with lots of easily applied suggestions from someone whose been there first hand. Here’s the website: http://www.LivingOutofDarkness.com
