Thanks Sarah, a clear article on a very important topic.
One on which therapists don’t seem to have much to say (strange do you think?)
I can’t think of a situation where it would be appropriate for a therapist to override a client’s wishes but I can think of times when it would be appropriate to not comply, if you see what I mean. After all adults are surely entitled to disagree. And it may be important to know that an intimate relationship can survive disagreements.
Absolutely, I think that discovery, that relationships can not only survive but even thrive on disagreement, is vital to functioning well and feeling OK, and so is bound to happen in the course of an effective counselling relationship…
