HI. RONDA, I AM PLACING THE 10MG DAYTRANA PATCH ON MY 8 Y.O. SON’S UPPER ARM. TRY IT. MY SON’S BROWN SKIN WOULD TURN RED ON THE HIP WHEN I APPLIED IT THERE. BUT IT NEVER BOTHERED ME AND IT WOULD GO AWAY A FEW HOURS LATER. MY SKINNY SON DOES HAVE MUCH FAT ON THE HIP. THE SKIN DOESN’T BREATHE MUCH WHEN THE PATCH IS ADHERED SECURELY ON THE SKIN. SO THE PATCH IS SUCKING THE BLOOD AND MAKING A HICKY. HIS ARM HAS MORE FAT AND MUSCLE SO I DON’T SEE HIS SKIN RED AFTER APPLICATION REMOVAL. THE MEDICATION STILL ABSORBS AND WORKS AFTER 2 HOURS OF APPLICATION. BUT HE STILL ITCHES AND I DONT KNOW IF IT IS PSYCOLOGICAL OR PHYSICAL SINCE SOME DAYS HE IS ITCHY AND SOMEDAYS HE DOESN’T KNOW HE IS WEARING IT. AISHA-PHARMACY TECHINICAN AND MOTHER OF A CHILD WHO WAS DIAGNOSED W/ AHDAD TWO YRS AGO.

My daughter has been on 10 mg patch since 12/21/07, she is now all of a sudden getting the red patches and they do not go away in a day- it takes awhile.
Does anyone know of anything I can do to help these irritation go away quicker? She is so small it is hard to find a place on her skin w/o any irritation?

Hi Amy, my 5 y/o daughter has been on the patch for 4 months now. We have had that same problem with the patch and it seems to vary with each box. One box will be easy to remove the backing and the next will be horrible. I now put the whole box in the freezer and take one out each morning. The backing removes like magic. Good Luck!

My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome at 3. I know that some parents don’t think you should medicate. But my daughter was so impulsive that meds are the only way to give her enough control to not do things that would get her hurt, or worse. Meds actually help her to sleep better. She has NEVER been a good sleeper. We have been fine tuning her dosage as we go, but we were really having a problem with her med levels crashing. Morning grades were good but afternoon classes were a problem. So we started splitting her dose. 54mg of Concerta in the morning, 18 mg at noon and 18 mg in the afternoon. She did better with that schedule. The pediatrician wanted her to see a developmental pediatrician. He switched her to Daytrana, which has been wonderful. Her teacher says even her hand writing has improved to the point that she didn’t recognize it. We have way fewer mood swings and her appetite is much improved. Fewer stomach aches, and I have to do less teasing of her appetite, she loves soup, so I make lots of soups to keep her more interested in eating. The Asperger’s adds a twist though. She can’t tolerate Band-aids, I assume it’s along the lines of clothing irritating autistic kids, so we had to make a rule. She follows rules very well. The rule is “You cannot take off the chill pills.”
What I want to know is, has anyone found a way to get the patches to release from the backing without wrecking the patch. The first batch we had didn’t have this issue. I spent 20 minutes this morning wrestling with the adhesive. Then it occurred to me that they might do better if the patches are chilled. The adhesive might turn loose from the backing if it were more brittle since you hold you hand over it for 30 seconds to get it to adhere to the skin. We’ll see. I have one in the fridge to test my theory. I know it can’t be good to mangle it like I have been doing.

Just for the record, a special needs teacher at my son’s school spent a number of years trying to pressurize us into putting our son medication. I thought ‘Over my dead body.’ We are still facing a long struggle but I am one hundred percent sure we have taken the right choice. The dope that ’specialists’ seek to pump into our kids is primarily for the educators’ benefit (keeps the brat quiet in class) and of course the pharmaceutical companies who are making obscene amounts of money out of parents’ worries and concerns. I say tell them where to shove their drugs.

OH PEGGY DID YOU TELL THE PRESCIBER THAT DAYTRANA IS NOT WORKING OUT FOR THEM. MAYBE THEY NEED TO INCREASE THE DOSE. ASK FOR AN INCREASE DOSE BEFORE SWITCHING. OR ELSE DAYTRANA ISN’T FOR THEM.

HELLO. JOY DAVIS, LOSS OF APETITE IS A SIDE OF EFFECT OF ALL ADHD STIMULATES SINCE THEY WORK ON THE SAME PART OF THE BRAIN THAT SENDS SIGNAL ON APETITE. MY SON IS 50LB AT 8YRS. THERE ARE KIDS WHO ARE YOUNGER WHO WEIGH MORE THAN HE. MY SON DOESNT EAT LUNCH WHEN ON DAYTRANA AND ALSO WHEN HE WAS ON FOCALIN (COMPLAINTS OF STOMACH ACHES). ON SCHOOL DAYS, I SUGGEST THAT YOU GIVE YOUR CHILD A HEALTH BREAKFAST AND DINNER AND AFTER SCHOOL SNACKS, FOR SCHOOL LUNCH OFFER YOUR CHILD SNACKS/MUNCHIES SUCH AS CEREAL BARS AND FRUIT CUPS AND CRACKERS OR ENSURE OR WHOLE MILK FOR BEVERAGE- GIVE 100% JUICE OR WATER. ON THE WEEKENDS AND NO SCHOOL DAYS, DO NOT APPLY THE PATCH OR LIMIT THE PATCH FOR 3TO4 HOURS WEAR TIME IF HE NEEDS TO GO OUT AND NEEDS TO HAVE CONTROLLED BEHAVIOR.
PEGGY, I NEVER HEARD OF ADHD INDICTED FOR SLEEP. IT USUALLY CAUSES SLEEPLESSNESS. BUT MY CHILD CAN FALL ASLEEP WHILE ON THE MEDICINE. BUT IT DOESNT CAUSE DROWSINESS.

My two grandchildren began the Daytrana patch instead of their Adderall pills to help them sleep and as an easier alternative than pills. The patch is not working and we are very disappointed in the results. It is like they are taking no medication at all. When asking my 7-year old grandson to explain how he feels, he says he can’t because he can’t use the naughty words that he feels…he knows that the medication is not working. He is angry, loud, runs everywhere, and is still not sleeping. My granddaughter is not getting any effects of the medication, either, and is more mouthy and cries a lot. Can’t wait to get back to taking the Adderall.

Greetings Everyone: My son is 6 years old and was first prescribed Focalin XR for ADHD. He was lathargic, had a severe loss of appetite, and felt nausea throughout the day. He is now on the Daytrana patch 10mg. I am now finding out he doesn’t eat his lunch at school because his tummy hurts so he throws it away. He eats a full breakfast and late late dinner after the patch wears off. I am concerned that he might not gain his normal weight. His teachers report he is on-task, completes his assignments, and stays in his seat. I know he has done a 360 as far as his behavior is concerned however does anyone have any suggestions for gaining his appetite at lunch. I read on the blog that someone uses a vitamin as a supplement. My son is so tiny it concerns me that he is throwing away his lunch.

    Thanks Joy Davis

I had the same problem with my daughter. She got Red Lights (which is bad) at school every day. Now she only gets Green Lights. Try to give it a few more days Becky, and if he’s no better his body may not be able to handle that particular medicine. My Dr. said there were several different ones we could try but Thank The Lord we have done good on Daytrana, which is the first we’ve tried. You’ll probably see a decrease in his appetite also, so don’t be alarmed. My daughter eats very little during the day, but if we take the patch off at least by 5:00, she usually eats a good dinner at night and I usually let her snack a little more at night now than I used to due to her not eating as much. She does eat fairly well at breakfast too. Our Dr. put her on a good vitamin to help also. My nephew is 10 and is also ADHD and they have had to change his medicine several times so don’t get discouraged. Thank goodness for this blog. Good Luck!
