Thanks Delene for the info! My son is only 4 1/2 and grades are not an issue at this point. We started this whole process because his behavior was so out of control. He started on Straterra in July 07 and we had wonderful results within four days. His meltdowns have almost gone away and when he does have one it is managable. I think the Straterra was helping with his anxiety, but not so much with the ADHD. With each increase of the Straterra I never saw a change with his hyperactivity and attention span. Getting him to take a pill is a huge ordeal every night. The patch sounded so perfect, but I just don’t know if it is important for him at his age. We have been on 60mg of Straterra and have room to increase, but he would have to take 2 pills instead of one to increase to 80mg. I am so confused and really don’t know what to do at this point. His Dr. told me to give him the weekend to adjust to the patch, but I hate to make him go through that when he is so young and grades aren’t an issue at this point. I am sure this will work out, but I hate second guessing that I am making the right decision.

Hi Becky, my 5 year old daughter has been on the 10mg patch for 3 months now. Her first week was horrible. She was so emotional and cried big sad tears at the drop of a hat. Then she became aggressive and didn’t act like herself. I called the Dr. and he said to give it a few more days. She was much better after the first week or two. I can handle the ADHD at home but she needed the patch to help her do her work at school. She makes straight A’s now where before her teacher couldn’t get her to sit down to do her work. I did try leaving the patch off on a Saturday and Sunday one weekend but the tears and aggressiveness were back on Monday. I won’t do that again. It will take a few days for your son to adjust. Hang in there and good luck.

My son just started the patch today on 10mg. He has been aggressive, angry, very tearful and not acting himself at all. This is the first stimulant he has been on and I don’t know if this is a normal response for the first day. He started to act himself again within an hour of removing the patch. I was told he could be emotional, but I was not expecting this! His teacher reported that he was very emotional all day and got upset and was either crying or mad over any little thing. He also wet his pants. This never happens during the day.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My daughter has been on Daytrana since it was first offered. She was on Adderall XR before the Daytrana. The Adderall was causing extreme mood swings and facial tics. The change to Daytrana has been wonderful. We too have had some problems with the adhesive. But, I was told to put the patch in the freezer for a minute or so prior to using it. This has worked perfectly for us. We live in very high humidity, so the release of the covering has been difficult without the freezer. My daughter starts school at 7:15 a.m. We put the patch on at about 6 or 6:15 a.m. I put my full hand over the patch on her hip or upper buttock for 30 seconds. The heat from my hand (or hers) warms the patch and it sticks perfectly.

Though I was very discouraged with the application process in the beginning, we have now had at least a year with no problems. My daughter has grown and gained weight and has a much better appetite with Daytrana than with Adderall. Her focus is amazingly better. Daytrana has been a true blessing in our lives.

She does have skin irritation at the sight of application, but her body has adjusted and it is not nearly as bad as it was in the beginning. She applies cream on the side without the patch and it clears without problems.

Be aware that the medication is in the adhesive, so if you are using a 20 mg patch and its too strong you can just cut it in half so as not to waste the medicine.

    Good luck!!

HELLO. SINCE THE COLD WINTER IN WASH,DC BEGAN, MY SON’S SKIN HAS BEEN VERY DRY. HIS HIP AREA AND LEGS ARE ASHY AND DRY AND ITCHY. SO I STARTED TO APPLY THE PATCH ON HIS UPPER ARMS WHERE HIS SKIN IS SELDOMLY DRY. THE MEDICATION IS ABSORBED AND WORKS WITHIN 2 HOURS. THE MANUFACTURE PRINTS TO PLACE ONLY ON HIP, BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THE PATCH DOESNT HAVE TO BE APPLIED ON HIP AND TRANSDERMAL MEANS THRU. THE TOPICALLY SKIN. I AM A CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN SINCE 1992 AND A MOTHER WHOSE CHILD HAS BEEN ON DAYTRANA SINCE SPRING 2007. ALL DRUGS HAVE SIDE EFFECTS. PLEASE TELL YOUR DOCTOR ALL OF YOUR CONCERNS.

    Hi again,
First of all, to Jill, whose daughter has been getting tics since being on Daytrana, two things:
    1) This happened to my son also, but it settled down after several weeks on the medication.
    2) If you’d rather not risk that, it’s useful to know that drugs have something called a “half-life”, which means how long it actually takes for the drug to be completely cleared from the system. I don’t know the half-life of Daytrana, but it would be worth it to find out.

To Loretta, you might want to try a mild over the counter Hydrocortisone cream on the red patches. Ask your doctor about this. This also worked for my son. Good luck.

The patch really works well for my 10 year old son, the only problem is he says it itches him and he has a red spot where the patch came off. Is there anything I can do to prevent the redness. I take the patch off when its time but he’s still red. Besides that I have no complaints because he takes less of a dose with the patch than pills. He already has to take enough pills because of his clclothymic disorder, so I’m grateful foe the patch.

    Hello,
I am very upset and worried about my daughter. She is 7 years old. She began using the Daytrana patch 10mg. once a day about 1 week and 1/2 ago. After about 12 days she began having some tremors and tics. I took the patch off immediately when these symptoms began but still almost 24. hrs. have gone by and she is still having tremors and ticks. I called her doc. and she says that the medication should be out of my daughter’s system apprximately 3 hrs. after the patch is taken off so these tremors are not caused by the Daytrana. I just find it hard to believe that she suddenly started these symptoms while on this medication and tremors and tics are a written side effect of the patch. I believe this was caused by the medication. Now I am afriad this could have messed up her nervous system forever. Has anyone out there ever had an experience like this? If so, what happened with your experience and do you have any advice on what to do? I beleive I am going to take her to the hospital ER if this continues. I was just hoping that by taking the patch off it would have stopped the symptoms. Thank you.

    Hi Caryn,
I’m not an expert, but from my understanding, Daytrana is used for ADHD, not to overcome anxiety. There are many anti-anxiety meds available, but I don’t think this is one of them. But Daytrana is a stimulant, and like most stimulants, one of its side effects can be tics, like the blinking you referred to. Taking him to a psychologist (or a psychiatrist, at least initially, since they are the ones who can prescribe), sounds like the best next step. They’ll help you figure out the maze of symptoms, and hopefully find a diagnosis. You really can’t medicste unless you have a diagnosis. Good luck.

I am so glad I finally found a place to talk about Daytrana. My son (13) has been on it since it first came out. I was tired of opening capsules and he and I were tired of fighting. He was on 30 mgs. up to the summer when we take a break. When school started I noticed it was way too much. I have been cutting the patch in 1/2 which has been working fine. I now realize from all of you that I should get up earlier and put on because he seems to have problems in first period. But now I have other problems — he has anxiety, panic attacks where he can not breathe. He also seems to lose his temper easily and also looks like he is developing a tick (something with blinking)> I am taking him to a psychologist…but I
am at wits end. This child has always been an A/B student. His grades are falling fast. I thought he was overwhelmed because he was falling behind but I am not sure. He was using the patch to overcome his anxiety about his learning disablility of dysgraphia.
I am at a loss. Does anyone else experience this with their kids?
Also, I don’t give him the patch on weekends. Does anyone else do this?
    Any feedback would be great
    Thanks for listening
    Caryn
