51My 6 yr old daughter uses the 15mg patch and has done wonderfully. But she has dropped down to less than 45lbs because she has no interest in food. Her doctor is considering taking her off and trying another drug. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative/herbal appetite boosters.

52Try having her eat as much as she wants RIGHT before bed. That is when they are most hungry.

53Daytrana is the only drug my 8 yr. old will take for ADHD symptoms. And I am worried that parents’ complaints with the sticky backing will cause Shire to withdraw the drug from the market. Without Daytrana my son would be expelled from every public organiztion. Please let Shire know that Daytrana has been a blessing to your child’s ADHD symptoms. I am a pharmacy technician and all topical patches will cause a skin reaction. But the drug that is released from them is more important than 1 minor skin irritation. I love Daytrana and so does my kid.

54My 5 year old daughter was just started on Daytrana. She has never taken medicine before this patch to treat her ADHD. Today was the first day we put on the 10mg patch. We took it off at 4:00 when we picked her up from school. Her teacher said she did better today with focusing on her work. I just didn’t see that much difference. The patch also made a nice pink square area where the patch was. It doesn’t look blistered or bumby just red. Is this normal? She has still been really hyper at home this afternoon. Does this patch take full effect the first day? I don’t care that she’s hyper at home but it makes me wonder if she acted like this at school today even with the patch on. If anyone knows please comment. Thanks!

55RE: Delia Smith
It is completely normal for her to have a red square where the patch was placed.
As far as you not seeing much change, two things could be possible. The patch may have worn off for her by the afternoon or she needs a higher dose. It is not unusual to have it wear off sooner than expected for some.
This may be a result of her matabolizing it more quickly or a higher dose is needed OR BOTH.
Give ity another couple of days and if you still see no major change by afternoon, call her doctor.
Hope this information helps. :o)

This surly behavior that you described is exactly what is happening with our seven year old son. Unfortunately, it occurs whether the patch is on or not, but it does seem worse in the hour after it is removed. Matthew is silent and brooding. Like your child, he also grunts and even growls. He won’t let us touch him or speak to him. I think it may be worse than the symptoms he had with the ADHD.
Have you spoken to your pediatrician about this? We haven’t yet.

57Our daughter has experienced remarkable success with Daytrana. She is currently on 15 mg, but just received a prescription to increase her dose to 20mg. Today when she took her patch off, the red square looked “raised” from irritation. I know it is normal to have a red square left on her hip, but has anyone experienced the “raised” effect? I am going to call the pharmacist tomorrow. I also wondered if it could be increased irritation due to dry skin since the cold weather is here and we have the furnace on. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful. Thanks!

58Today is my 9 year old sons 4th day on a 10 mg. Daytrana patch. I’ve noticed very slight changes. How long before something really noticeable happens. Tomorrow with be his first day at school with the patch and I’m curious if his teacher notices any changes. I did put them in the refrigerator and they do peel off more easily. After removal the area is red and raised but by the next morning it’s fine. Baby oil has worked great at getting the excess glue off. My doctor advised me to put them high on his back. I also put it on his hip. Is there any difference in absorption by where you place it?
Thank you – Susan -

59Susan,
I hope that your son’s first day back to school with Daytrana was a success. I have a 10 year old son who has been on Daytrana since the end of February of this year. He has the same irritation of the skin as your son does. The redness goes away within the next day. My son is very small and even though we alternate hips, we run out of places to put the patch sometimes. I talked to my doctor about putting them elsewhere, she said, after some reasearch, that the patch needs to be put on the hip or butt area because it needs to be on a fatty part of the body. You also said that you did not see a big change on 10mg, it may be that you need to try a higher dose, 15 mg. My son was 9 when we started and he was started on the 15 mg patch. He used to be on 25mg of adderall xr. I noticed a differance the first day that he was on the patch. He didn’t have any mood swings, he wasn’t very emotional when he comes off of the medicine. I didn’t tell his teachers about the change in medication. They knew that we were trying different things, they came to me on the first day of using the patch at school and asked what was going on with my son. They said that he was more focused in class. He was able to pay attention and nothing distracted him that day. It has been the best thing that I could have done for my son. My only complaint is that it takes longer for the patch to take effect that when he was taking a pill, but I guess I can live with that problem because everything else about Daytrana is great.

60Tracy, thank you for responding. I forgot to mention this is the first medicine my son has been on. Initially my doctor gave him pills but he couldn’t swallow them. We tried one day and swithched to the patch. No comments from school. I’m going to wait until the end of the week to ask his teacher if she’s noticed any changes. Still noticing some changes at home. I’d like to continue with the 10 mg. until our next Dr. visit which will be one month from starting meds. His appetite has diminished some and he seems more thirsty. I’ll keep observing, hopefully this med. is the right fit for him. Thanks again, Susan
