Well, it has been 2 days since I started cutting the 10 mg patch in half, for my 5yr old. I have noticed a change. He is not so focused on the t.v. or game. He doesn’t seem as “down”. But yet he’s not bouncing off the walls. It’s strange to see a triangle rather than a square on his behind!!

I just got my first batch of patches for my son. We haven’t started yet, but I have been reading the package insert with great interest. It states not to use it with children under 6 as “it has not been studied in this age group”. It also says not to cut thepatch or store it for any long period of time in the freezer as some posts here have suggested to do for peeling the backing. Is you doctor suggesting these things? I work in the pharmaceuticak industry and I know these recommendations are not to be taken lightly. Just being concerned!!

Hi Lacy how is your son doing since you cut the patch in half?

Rena,
Thanks for asking, Gaven is not as “zombiefied”. He has not been as whinny, he seems to have a better appetite. It seems to take the edge off, he’s not bouncing off the wall, like he would if he didn’t have the patch on.
Mirian,
My son is the size of a 7 year old, I was also concerned about the package insert and what the daytrana website said. I read it all, and studied it very good before putting the first patch on his behind. He was 3 1/2 years old when he was diagnosed with the ADD/ADHD. So I have been dealing with this for a while. I didn’t run out and get him on medicine right away. I tried for 2 and a half years to deal with it on my own and try other ways. My big thing with the medicine is that I didn’t want Gaven to be anything other than himself. Daytrana has allowed that. But, it’s the summer. The 10mg worked great during school he was able to sit and listen and was able to be controlled by his teacher. I don’t want him to have to go through any of the “side effects” all over again once school started back up. So I kept using the patch. He is just over focused. That’s why I considered cutting the patch in half. To where he gets the medicine a little. It is a decision I did not take lightly, I did talk to whom I felt I needed to talk to about what I did for MY son.

We started my son on the 10mg patch monday and today is day 3. I must say I haven’t really noticed anything with him. He seems a bit more even keeled, but I haven’t noticed any changes in sleep or eating patterns. He is going to a friends house today which is usually a stresser for him and would make him act out more. I am wondering if I should try a higher does? We wanted to start before school did so we could see what/if he had any problems with side effects. So far nothing, but them I am wondering if it is effective at all. I put it on at 6 AM when I go to work. He takes it off at 3-4 PM. So I am relieved that he has not experienced any side effects, I amnow concerned if it is working at all! AAAAAARGH!

Mariam,
My son experienced no side effects and it works well. He is 9 years old and is on the 10mg patch. My son was diagnosed with being highly distracable and his focus when the patch is on, is unbelievible and the teachers noticed a huge difference within a week of getting the patch. Some other people may have had or are having issues with it but I think it is the best thing for my son. Give it a week, you should see a difference.

Well today is day three on the patch. We switched from Concerta because of sleep issues, which we still have on this. My main concern is that he seems down, and his eyes are glassy. He is not his happy self and seems depressed and sad. Not wanting to play with his friends as much and such. I don’t like this effect AT all. Will this go away or is this not the right med for him. I don’t want him to be a zombie! He is on 10 MG. Thanks for ANY input you can give me.

How old is your son, how much does he weigh? That does have a lot to do with the amount given. Many people have cut the patch in half even though it hasn’t been highly recommended, but parents know their kids better than the scientists making the patch. Many of the parents who have cut the patch in half have noticed a difference in the kids, in a good way and it still works for them. Maybe try that and see if he is any better.

My 10 yr. old son has been taking it during school only (not during summers) and we had that same issue early on. He had this same problem and also loss of appetite. The doctor instructed us to have him remove it earlier in the day or have the teacher to remind him right after lunch. This seemed to help. I truly believe in this patch and he went from making a C in conduct and A’s and B’s in class to all A’s and A+s. It gives him control of his actions and keeps him out of trouble.

This is day 4 for us and I haven’ noticed any side effects and I am still not sure if it is having any effect all. He is 10 years old, weighs about 72-75 pounds. His skin is clean, patch stays on for 9 hours at least. No difference in appetite (thank God!) or sleep (sleeps well, but he always has, also on Strattera). Any suggestions to see if it has any effects or will I have to wait till school starts?

I would see if the Stretara has anything to do with the side effects or lack there of. My son doesn’t have any eating or sleeping problems with the patch, but like I said, the teachers noticed a HUGE difference in his ability to pay attention and his focus in school.

Right now I think we will keep him at 10mg and see how things go with school. Then if we feel he needs it we can try the 15mg patch. I would prefer the lower dose unless it doesn’t help at all! But again, with him it is difficult to realy tell until he is in school. I am starting to like the fact there are no sdie effects! We have been dealing with upset stomachs and head aches for ever!

Hi, is anyone else experiencing a very red raised itchy area after removing the patch? My daughter (10 yrs, entering 5th gr), started on 10mg in March. It didn’t seem to help as much as she needed. We had just filled a 90 day prescription, so Dr. told me to use 20mg total, one 10mg patch on each hip, for the 6 weeks until it was used up, so as not to waste the 10mg refill. Then when we ran out she wrote a prescription for the 20 mg. Using both hips each day for that 6 wks never gave her skin a break (we did try to move them higher and lower to save her skin) so now she has a large red raised area each side. Now we are on 20 mg and rotating sides again but it’s still red and irritated. I have been using cortisone but the area itches and she has scratched so much she has broken the skin in some places. However, we dont’ want to just switch meds again because we’ve tried others that caused attitude, severe appetite changes, sleep disturbance, etc. This is the best med for her so far. Even though the dose change took place in the summer, we have had her doing some worksheets and even timed math tests and she is doing much better w/ her focus. So I don’t want to stop the patches….but I need to know what I can do as far as ointment or lotion or anything that will heal up these bad areas (and preferably something that works overnight so she doesn’t have both sides bothering her constantly). Thanks for any help or ideas anyone can share. Thanks, Jenny

My grandson (age7) is doing well in school since starting on the patch. There is one BIG problem. He gets raised red ,almost blisters from the patch. My daughter moves it to a different area everyday but he is still so sore! The Dr. had recommended that she wash the area good after removing the patch and apply neosporin. It helps with the terrible itching but his legs are both so sore. It almost looks like a burn. I don’t know if the patch is worth all that.

We are starting the patch in about an hour and a half. I am extremely nervous as my son as a heart issue. All the specialists keep in close contact with each other and next week we will be going for a follow up EKG. I too am worried about the zombie feeling for my son. I am hoping this balances him so he can reel it in and enjoy life. School starts in three weeks, so hopefully bt then we can find the balance and he can start the year on a good foot. Just an FYI, I was told balmex might help with any red irritation since my son has sensitive skin. This might help with your daughter.

Stephanie, how did it go with your son’s first day on Daytrana? Thanks for the balmex idea for my daughter. I hadn’t heard of that but had found many other ideas doing internet searches since my post. We have been using Aquaphor (a Eucerin product) the past week or so and are having good results….not 100% cleared up, but close. Thanks!

Balmex AFTER you remove the patch? My 5-year-old son is experiencing severe skin irritation. I’m wondering if the balmex helped.

Jenny198.3
Hi Laurie, I didn’t try the Balmex because I had been using Eucerin Aquaphor and it is doing the job so I didn’t want to switch & risk a recurrence. I am using the “healing ointment” advanced therapy (ingredients says 41% petrolatum). It looks and feels like Vaseline but must have something more in it because we tried that and it didn’t seem to have much effect. Good luck to you!

My son has been using the 10 mg patch now for three weeks and I can’t believe how good he is doing wit hit. Even his skin is hadnling it well, no redness or irritation (hope that during the winter it will stay like that!). He has become a pleasant person to be around, without the extreme highs and lows and melt downs. He started football practice last week and people have noticed how he was “in it” all the time (before he would be there mentally maybe 25% of the time). He is now a starter and scored 2 touch downs during a scrimmage last night! All this succes has built even more confidence in him and he is so happy. I hope when school starts this will continue. I still keep waiting for the negative but so far…nothing. His appetite has stayed the same when on the patch (which despite his skinny-ness has always been good). A few hours after the patch comes off he is starving. So he is actually eatng more overall on the patch. No stomach aches or head aches. No excessive sleepyness and nor trouble going to sleep either. When is this bubble going to burst?

Hi, I started my son on this patch after the Dr. prescribed it. He is 6 and just recently was diagnosed as ADHD. He is extremely ADHD and it effects every aspect of his life. He cannot even sit through dinner or a movie he enjoys. The constant redirection he needs has caused problems every where, including parents not allowing him to play with their children. After 1 yr in school I had received ph calls daily from the school about his behavior problems. The school went as far as to threaten to expel him in kindergarten! He is not aggressive just always on the go and touching things. So here are my issues with this supposed wonder patch:1. the adhesive is impossible, even after trying all the tricks suggested I was still tossing ripped ones in the toilet. Why not use the same concept as (Orthroevert (sp) a patch prescribed for birth controll) with the same idea but worn weekly can be easily removed and stay on through daily actives and showering? What is the point of making the adhesive so not user friendly?
2. As with many Americans my company shutdown and I no longer have health insurance, and my husbands work does not offer it. (we do not qualify for state insurance) So i am left paying out of pocket for this monthly prescription. After using the free 30day certificate from the manufactures web site i was informed that the cost was almost $300.00! Have you lost your mind! Or is it that this company is so greedy that it needs to milk the money from families who not only are dealing with a child who needs extra attention but while your at it why not add to the stress of trying to come up with the money to get the needed medication. Does it really cost that much to make a 30 day supply. Oh and lets not forget to point out for a second time, the adhesive issues and how many $10.00 bills I flushed down the toilet literally.
3. The simple fact that the absorption into the skin takes to long for an average family’s lifestyle. Getting up at 5a.m. to put the patch on so that it will be working in time for school isn’t my idea of helpful.
4.Well now that after 4 tries I have managed to get a patch to come off correctly, and he has made it through his day at school, as I am still in zombie mode from my 5am wake up. It is time to remove the patch. OH LOOK! the adhesive has decided it wasn’t going to come off! So I now get to yet again try all the useful tips I have read to remove the cotton edged adhesive square on my child’s hip. So I begin the picking, rubbing, scrubbing with this that and the other all the while wondering where I put the orange scented GOOEGONE. After a good 30min of this and listening to a complaining 6 yr old it is off. He now has a square red mark at witch I kiss and have spongebob hide in hopes to make my son smile. 5. Connect the dots time, Its a rash! Bagbalm, neosporn, chapstick, benadril cream, and more spongebob! Wow looks like companies are making some money off of me! Crap! im running out of space so ill continue later.

When something that seems so promising doesn’t work for you it is beyond frustrating and upsetting, even more so when you pay out of pocket for it. I have the same type of feelings for all the other meds we have tried for my son! All the tears and money we spent. For us this patch is a wonder patch..why? Because it works…for my son! You will find something that will work for you too. It is a long and frustrating process. Also with growing children something that works great suddenly stops working and then you are back to square one. I personally HATEd the birth control patch just for the reason you mentioned you liked it (having to stay on for a week). It caused me pain and aggrevation. On top of that I had a period every 2 weeks. So for me that didn’t work. I hope you will find something soon that will work for your son. I also hope soon that medications and health care costs will become affordable for all people, one way or another. There are way too many people in your situation and way too many one lay-off away from that (like myself).

I am cracking up reading your response. We started the patch yesterday and I am already DONE with it. I totally agree with you on all of the issues. My daughter was on Concerta and doing great except for a MAJOR sleeping issue. Well, guess what? We were up until midnight again last night. I removed it at 5:30. Paid $60.00 copay for a worthless med. I guess that tomorrow, I’ll also get up at 5am so I can get the med in her system before school starts. What the heck? Who thinks this is a good idea? I put her patch on 3 1/2 hours ago and it is just now STARTING to work.I’ll be calling the pediatrician tomorrow. I can’t do this.
