RE: Mitzy
I’m sorry that your son had such a terrible reaction to the Daytrana patch, but please don’t say that you do not recommend it to others because of his own personal experience. All medications are given with warnings of potential side effects. We as parents, should read the enclosed information before administering or applying the medication. It is vital that we educate ourselves of any possible reactions like your son had and be prepared on what to do if problems should arise.
Every person reacts differently to medications. You and I could take the same exact dose of Motrin right now and 1 hour later you could be perfectly fine. But for me, I would be bleeding internally. Does that mean that you and everyone else should never take Motrin ever again? Of course not. It simply means, I had a very bad reaction and my body can’t handle Motrin the same way as yours can. It is the same way with your son and Daytrana.
Again, I’m truly sorry and I hope your son is doing better now. I pray you find something soon that does work for him without any serious side effects.

Don’t give up hope!! I felt exactly the same a couple of month’s ago when my son first started Daytrana. We,in the end, had no choice but to take him off for the same reasons–he was just an emotional wreck. My heart was broken–I am still broken-hearted that we had to resort to medication in the first place–but we have since switched him to Concerta and I am happy to say he is doing great. No more moodiness and a definite improvement in behavior. My heart goes out to you, hang in there…there is light at the end of the tunnel….

My daughter has been taking Daytrana for over a year now. It has done wonders for her. We have learned alot about how to use the medication. The answer to keeping them from taking it off, is putting the patch on their back instead of their hip. It has the same effectivness. We keep our patches in the refrigerator to make them easier to peal. She is on 15 mg., but we buy the 20 mg. and we cut them down. We use the pieces on weekends to save money. We have seen some inconsistancies, and we thought we got a “bad batch” of patches. When we see this, we use the whole 20 mg. It seems to help some. The main side effects have been weight loss and not going to sleep right away at bedtime. We normally take the patch of around dinner time. Overall, we are happy with the results, but we have never tried another of this type medication.

We just started our son on the 10mg patch this am, and I am wondering if anyone has had weird things happen like…he keeps playing with his toungue, and licking and chewing his tongue…it’s really strange…and.. he was touching his throat for a little while as well…he is a non verbal autistic child as well, so i guess I am worried its an allergic reaction?? he has no hives, is breathing fine, and is drinking water very well.

My daughter is autistic as well as ADHD, and was using the Daytrana patch/15mg for a few weeks. This medicine, in my opinion, is the absolute WORST I have ever seen. Not only was the plastic hard to peel away from the patch, but it constantly rolled off of my daughter’s skin. The patches are huge, and after wearing them for 9 hours as prescribed, my daughter developed an allergy to the medication. That means when the patch was removed, there was a raised red skin irritation (contact dermatitis), which would take 2-3 days to disappear. I alternated sides when placing on the patch and had to get a prescription cream to take care of the rash. My daughter cannot swallow pills, and is now taking Methylin, which is a liquid suspension of what Daytrana is. I really wish the drug manufacturer of Daytrana could improve this drug and if not, then just take it off of the market. And why haven’t other drug manufacturers created an ADHD patch similar to Daytrana, only better??

We have so far had some good things with the patch, and bad things as well, He is much more calm during school, and at home which allows for more activities to take place, and more learning. Bad things are the insomnia, and aggression issues we have been experiencing…my son hit me HARD for the first time in his little life!! when we mentioned it to the Dr she suggested cutting the dose/patch in half, and that seems to have solved all of the issues!! So far so good, although it’s only been a couple of weeks, I am hopeful this will work a bit longer than some of the other things we have tried in the past.

My son has been on Daytrana for over a year. He is 7 years old. This medicine helps him focus in school. I tried to take him off it for 4 days this last weekend. While he was manageable during the weekend, at school the teacher said he was out of control (she didn’t know he was off the med). We promptly put him back on the patch. HOWEVER, he still had another bad day two days after we put him back on the patch. This is unheard of for my son. He never had bad days at school while on the patch. Has anyone had a similar experience? Does it take awhile for the patch to kick in (like several days?).

From time to time I have thought that some of the patches weren’t working — someone here had a good tip though. The skin must be very clean. If you touch the patch itself while applying it (sometimes those triangles just don’t want to come off) and the skin has places where there might be dirt/soap/lotion, I think that could keep the patch from being effective. Also to take off the sticky stuff, I use Sticky Out. It’s a lemon-scented oil that removes adhesive. I use it when she’s in the shower and then wash that off with soap. It works well.

I just wanted to say that I have had no problems with the patch. My son takes the 10mg dosage and though he isn’t diagnosed as hyperactive but as highly distractable, it has improved his ability to focus on tasks in school and his grades have improved because of this. I do have a suggestion of how to remove the backing, it works everytime. To take off the first side, remove the backing by the middle of the patch and the other side remove by the curved corner. You should have no problem getting it off after that.

My son is 5 yrs old and is on the 10mg dosage, my question is, If I were to cut the patch, would I cut it diaganol or straight accross. He is on summer break and and when school starts back up he will be in Kindergarten. He is almost zombish some days and others not so. And he is also very whinny. One day a week I usually leave the patch off, so he can act like himself and eat. But on those days he is bouncing off the walls. I’ve read some of the post that say you can cut the patch and some that say not to. I wish they made the 5mg, I very conflicted on what to do for him. I don’t want to leave the patch off all summer long, because I don’t want him to have to go through the side effects again. I know he needs the patch, but it kills be when he’s on it, because he seems depressed? and I can’t handle him when he’s not. If someone could offer me some advice???

Hi Lacy my son has been on the patch for 17 months. My son also experiences side effects from the patch. When the patch is removed he is restless and moody. He also has a lack of appetite as well. But in school it really helped him. During the last quater he got all A’s on his report card. I can tell you that I did contact Shire the company that makes Daytrana and they do not recommend that the patch be cut in half stating that they have no research with a lower dosage or the pactch cut in half. I also have heard of other people reporting that they do cut the patch in half and have seen tremendous results. So toward the end of the school year I decided to give it a try. Obviously, I was nervous but I’m glad I tried it. Cutting the patch in half has worked wonders. My son was not as larthargic/zombie like and it appears that he was more himself. Basically, cutting the patch in half decreased the side effects. During the summer my son is not on the patch. The camp I have him in is very structured and they suggested that I discontinued the patch for the summer. Not every camp is like this. I searched long and hard for a camp that was very structured and would be able to deal with my son. I am a bit nervous about when he starts back to school since he had been off the patch the entire summer. But I will tell you I will put half the patch on him since that is what seems to suit him best. Good luck Lacy and take care.

Lacy — if your child is getting zombish he is probably overmedicated. You should contact your dr. immediately and discuss this.

My son just turned 10. He took Tenex in 1st grade but quickly switched to Strattera. He just finished 4tyh grade and has been on Strattera all that time. We do wean off for most of the summer. He decided he didn’t want to the pills anymore…but I foresee disaster in 5th grade. He is unfocused but not hyper, he is impulsive and can be moody. He has issues with anxiety which he bottles up until something will set it off and he has either a crying spell or is angry. We are getting ready to try the patch (10mg) before school starts. I like the fact that you can control when to put it on, how long to keep it on etc, but I am worried about increased anxiety while on the patch. Also, do you feel it is better to use it every day, or can we not use it on the weekends etc? As always, I am concerned….. if need be we will continue woth Strattera, though it has started to loose its effectiveness. Thank you.

My daughter (9) has been on the patch for the entire school year. At first, with 10 mgs, we did not see much of an improvement, so we raised the level to 15 mgs. We kept her at 15 for most of the school year, through the spring standardized testing cycle. Her improvement was dramatic. Her teachers went from seeing her as the trouble-maker to basically being a role model for other students. She scored at least 2 grade levels higher in math by the end of the year, and became a fluid reader. After the standardized testing, we lowered her to 10 mgs and she was completely fine at that level. This all sounds great right now, but at the time, we really worried about it. For one thing, she had some tics, some of which were really worrisome (involuntary arm movements, for example). She also did not eat very well until at least 6 pm or so, so she lost about 10% of her body weight. She became more anxious this school year, worrying about germs, spider webs, pollution, litter, crime, etc. And sometimes she was a bit zombie-ish during the day and then crying and moody in the evening. What’s interesting though is that the experience of being medicated taught her what focusing and controlling herself could feel like. So now, in summer, she is off the patch completely and having no problems at summer day camp. She likes being off the patch better and tries to just control her ADD symptoms herself, and to some degree, she is successful. I think we’ll put her back on 10mgs for school, but we may cut a bit off so that it’s 7 or 8 mgs instead, just to see if that’s enough medicine. It’s not easy, and I think it just takes time to see what works and what level/kind of medication is best, if any.

I am worried about the weight loss as my son is light and thin. Not unhealthy but he weighs about 68-70 pounds. He is all muscle and bone, very athletic. He eats like a horse though…. go figure! This is on or off the strattera. He has never had any sleep issues either so tha tworries me also. Plus he has anxiety issues on and off the Strattera so that is worry # 3…. *sigh* that is why we want to try it before school starts….
