131My son has aspergers and ADHD he is 6 and was diagonised at age 5 with aspergers and 3 with ADHD. It has been a difficult. We first tried Addrell which worked then seem to make him angry, alot. Then Ritalin which seemed to work but he has a very high metabilism and 6 hours of medication only last 4 so he began having difficulity during the down times before his next dose. We have just started the patch it took two hours for any effect to show and today I had to pick him up because of hitting at school and it seems that the patch is not having much of an effect, he is somewhat calmer that normal but not as much as when he was on the Ritalin. He is on 15mg and also take Clonidine during the day and night. Will the mood swings decrease as we continue with the patch? Could the Clonidine be contritubing to the moood swings. Any advise would be wonderful. I just feel stuck.

132Hi Mariah. My daughter just turned 6 and she’s been on Daytrana for 8 months. This is the first ADHD med the doc started her on so I can’t compare it to other meds. When she first started taking it she had severe mood swings, anger and crying big crocodile tears for the simplest little thing and had bad headaches. All of this was happening when after we took the patch off in the afternoons. My husband and I kept saying to ourselves this is not going to work so I said I would give it 2 weeks. It took about 2 or 3 weeks before we could tell a difference in her ADHD and the side effects went away after a couple of weeks, thank goodness. Now the only side effect we have is her appetite during the day is null & void. She eats breakfast and dinner but we can’t get to eat hardly any lunch. She has done wonderfully in school also. If he’s just started the patches, give it a few weeks before you decide on whether to continue them. Good luck to you and your little boy. God Bless!

134Hi, My son has been taking daytrana for 2 years. My son is skinny so I place near the fat side of his buttox . I remove the patch with baby oil. Then place an ointment base cortisone . Don’t forget that you are not to use electric blanket in the winter. This is stated in fine print on the big pap per that comes in the box.

135The comments on this thread have been very useful to me, thanks! We are getting ready to start Daytrana for the first time, and received a free 30-patch trial offer. I thought folks might want to know that it took 21 minutes to complete the card activation, which is a VERY long time in my book. We will probably get a bunch of junk mail now, but it saves us $170.

135.1I agree the activation of the card was incredibly long and annoying but it doies save us money. We are trying it out for the first time also.

136Hello,
We tried Strattera with my 8 yr old this summer, slowly upping the dose from the minimum to twice that. After about four weeks (seeing some benefits) she had a “black box” reaction to it, spending 48 hours crying, in fear, not eating, worrying about everything (pollution, bad people, germs, etc.), refusing to leave the house. We took her off immediately; her dr. says she’s a slow metabolizer, so too much medicine built up in her system. We switched to Daytrana at 10 mgs. Conversely, with this medication, we don’t see either benefits or side effects. We’ve been wondering if these patches are faulty, or if she needs a stronger dose. Or if Shire is conducting an experiment with some of the boxes being placebos? We did call in to do the interview to save some $.What do you think?

137My son is 13 and just started the patch 6 days ago. He has focus and organizational problems. I can’t find anything that tells us how long it takes before we see a difference. So far, the school year has been a continuation of last year where he isn’t organized, doesn’t turn in completed assignments, forgets things, etc.
How long should I wait to see benefits before I get concerned?

138Hi Shannon. My daughter is 6 and it took a full 2 weeks before we saw a difference. Within that two weeks she cried more than usual and had some pretty bad headaches, but after a couple of weeks the side effects were gone and the patch was working wonderfully. Good Luck!

139Good afternoon, I’d like to ring in on the DAYTRANA patch comments as both my 14 year old daughter and I wear them. I have adult ADD and she was diagnosed with ADHD and PTSS at pre-school age.
The dosage is 30mg, which delivers 3.3mgs each hour, worn for 9hrs.I actually found that my own ability to stay on task improves greatly when I wear the patch – my ADD doesn’t enable me to start something and complete it without thinking or starting a dozen other projects or things before I finish the first one (or half a dozen.) So it has been a boon for me. No noticeable side affects at all for me. Just a greater ability to stay focused.
As for my daughter, she never had any type of mood swing or dark moods or other emotional type side affects when she was switched from the tablet form of Methaphenidate meds that she was taking.
Our lives have surely become nicer, and happier. She is doing so well in highschool, since this is her first year back, having been homeschooled for the past 2 years, that alone testifies to the patch working so well. Granted, she does have some typical teenaged girl ‘stuff’ goin’ on – but in no way would I attribute that to the medication delivered from the patch. Adolescence is a tough time for our children, as it was for us – we just have to all remember that as adults, we used to be teenagers too!!
I am thrilled with the convenience and the fact that she doesn’t have to go into the highschool office for her ‘afternoon dose’ – also I find that if you bend the patch at the diagonal ‘line’ and then start to pick up the outter corner of each side it’s much easier to put it on. Rather like a bandaid peeling — hope that makes sense. Again, I’d rate the DAYTRANA patch with a TRIPLE A+ in all areas. As for the sticky residue, it comes right off with a bit of baby oil or olive oil, if not with a bit of effort in the shower with a ‘scubbie’ – hope this helps someone. Blessings be to all. She*
