Hi Gina, my 5 year old daughter has been on Daytrana for 5 months now. She will be 6 in July. Every day when we took off the patch she went through all kinds of emotions and energy spurts when she first started. The worst was the crying spells and she usually never cries. It all went away after a few weeks. It takes a while for the medicine to regulate their system. We love the Daytrana patch. Expect some decreased appetite too. Good Luck!

My son is 5 1/2 and we just strated Daytrana. On his first day after I removed the patch, about 2 hrs later he was very jumpy and could’t seem to sit still. And 9:00 pm that evening he was still wide awake even though I had removed the patch at 4:00 PM. Has anyone else experienced these reactions when your child first started the patch?

My 8 y/o son has been on the patch since September with excellent results. One thing has developed that I am concerned about. When he is doing a lot of physical activity his heart rate will sometimes go extremely high to the point of pain. Does any one know if this can be a side effect of this patch? I am so afraid that he will have to come off of this medication - which has made such a huge change in his life.

My son has been on the 10 mg patch since Sept and for the most part there have been no problems. His grades are wonderful and his moods are great the problem I have is that everyday he has a raised bright red patch that at times looks blistered or oozing. I make sure that I alternate sides but by the end of the week you can still see where Mondays patch was put on . I use cortisone on it at night and on weekends and vacations(when he does not wear the patch ) I have actually put olive oil on his skin. I know that sounds weird but the Dr. suggested it. I am looking for any suggestions on how to deal with this. His skin actually bleeds at times. He says he is not scratching the old areas but I cannot be sure.

The benefits of the med are so good that I would hate this to cause us to stop but I cannot have him look like a checker board. Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Laurie,

The patches that I use now have no problem at all with the backing. They come right off. You really have to make sure that your pharmacist is giving you good patches. It is a pain because they don’t seem to understand the problem. If they had a child with ADD/ADHD and they were trying to peel off a backing that is sticking to them and everything else while their child is protesting the entire thing - they would make SURE they had the right patches!! LOL! Regarding the appetite problem, my son had the same thing. I just feed him a lot at dinner when his appetite returned. It has been about 3 months and that problem has gone away. Every once in a while he will say he’s not hungry, then I just make sure he eats when he is, no matter what time it is.

Take care and good luck! My thoughts and prayers are with all the families fighting this “struggle”!!!!

    To all -

My son began wearing the patch in the spring of last year. He began with the 10 mg patch. The problem with the backing being peeled off was enough to drive a person crazy! Trying to get him ready for school and trying to get the backing off was maddening. It has gotten a lot better. He is on the 15 mg patch now and I too, believe it is has been a little better overall with the backing. But it is the best medication he has been on. His mood is even more pleasant and he concentrates great. It does however really affect his appetite. We actually have him on an appetite medication to try and spur his appetite. But we take it off about an hour before dinner and his appetite does return pretty well. But it is a great product, but his skin does get irritated. I put lotion on it at night while he is asleep. And we change sides each day, letting the other side recooperate a bit. I have talked to Shire before and they gave me hints and sent me cards for new ones. They say not to touch the medication, but with the way the backings are to get off, there is no way you can help but end up touching the medication. It seems to still work fine. We have had a lot of the medication come off before when the backings are really hard to take off and it still worked fine. I do recommend it. It works wonderful.

    Lori,

My son had a hard time at first coming off the patch. He got really irratable and “crabby”. It is better now, but it is still a bit of a problem. It only last an hour or so and then he seems to be okay. I figure the benefit that he gets at school with the patch out weights the hour or so that I have to deal with at night. He also had a problem getting to sleep the first couple of weeks so I gave him Melatonin and that helped.

I really hope this works for you. I know the struggle….

Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it. I have called Shire to let them know that I think we got a bad batch of the medicine and they are sending a coupon to get a new box.

I do have another question: How do your children react once the medicine wears off? My daughter seems a bit more hyper than usual and I was wondering if that will go away over time??

    Lori & Delene,
The backing on your patches should come off easily. You shouldn’t have to put them in the freezer or anything. If they are not coming off easily, you are getting the patches that Shire recalled and you need to talk to your pharmacist. If you call Shire, they will give you information for your pharmacist so they get the patches that are good with the correct expiration date. They will also give you a card for 40 free patches to replace the defective patches you were given. I found that all the pharmacies I tried didn’t even know about the recall!! They were dispensing bad prescriptions! I check EVERY time I get my prescription filled to make sure they have the correct expiration date. Even though I have talked to my pharmacist, they still get it wrong. Some of the meds come off when the patch is defective which means the meds are not being effective as they should be and could explain some of the issues you are having. Good luck!!! My 12 yr old son has been on them for about 3 months and we are really happy!

Lori, my daughter will soon be 6 and is also on the 10 mg patch. It took a good week or two before her teacher noticed a difference. She started out being so emotional and then more aggresive than usual but that only lasted a couple of weeks or I would have discontinued the patch. We love the patch now. She’s been on it for 5 months now. The adhesive issue will be different with each box you get. One will be better and the next will be worse. I have found that keeping the entire box of patches in the freezer helps the backs come off easier. They do irritate her skin but I always put hydrocortisone on her after her bath at night. They also itch when you first put it on she complains. Good luck to you and your daughter.
