Shari, my son, too is 8 yrs. Adderall 10mg initially didn’t work so we tried Focaline XR 15mg. He focused beautifully, however, he didn’t socialize at school. We then reduced the mg by 5. 10mg worked for a while but it wore off around 2pm. Daytrana 15mg work well into the evening, so I decided to reduce that dosage by 5 and 10mg work just fine. My problem with the patch is that my son complained of itching and sharp shooting pains stemming from the patch. The pain would come and go reguarly. This would happen daily until late afternoon. We stopped the patch because that in itself was a distraction. We are back to experimenting with other medications but are limited due to his food allergies including lactose, and some of the medications have lactose in them. Has anyone experienced sharp shooting pain coming from the patch while wearing it and after removing it in the evening. Later, my son complained of muscle pain.

    Please help?

My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD recently and after a long discussion with our doctor I reluctantly decided to put her on medication to see if it would help her. She started taking 10 mg. of Daytrana yesterday. I gave it to her at 7:45 AM and about an hour later she went to school. Her teacher told me that she immediately saw a remarkable difference that morning. She was attentive and focused and much less fidgety. She felt that the medication was less potent in the afternoon (around 1:00 pm). I removed the patch around 4:45 pm and she seemed to do just fine in the evening. Today I put her patch on at the same time as yesterday and the teacher said that it took much more time before she noticed the benefits of the medication. Also, when I picked my daughter up from school she was a little more anxious than normal but that only lasted about a half hour and then she seemed to relax. Those of you who are having success, did it take a week or so before it really made a difference? I am wondering if she is on the right dose. Also, I have had a difficult time applying the patches because I can’t peel the backing off easily and I am sure some of the medication came off with the backing this morning. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I am wondering if anyone had any issues with insurance coverage. My son has tried two oral meds and most times gags or vomits them up. I heard about the Daytrana but my insurance won’t cover it because it’s so new and he hasn’t been diagnosed with a swallowing disorder by a GI specialist. It’s so frustrating but how can a medication be effective if he doesn’t get the proper dosage? My doctor gave me a coupon for a free 30 day trial of the Daytrana and we LOVE IT. My son doesn’t have to go throught this huge ordeal every morning in order to take the meds. Now my problem is how do I get my insurance company to allow coverage for this? any suggestions?

My 12 yo son has been taking Daytrana since last June. First box had adhesive issues. BandAid brand WaterBlock Plus bandaids fit over the top and work fine. Last few batches have stuck, except during swim season, when we use the bandaids.

Just got notice from the insurance company that they will only pay if he is “unable to swallow pills.” ARGH! I have to file an appeal. Anyone else run into this? Advice on wording the appeal?

My daughter is on the 10 mg patch and we’ve had the same problem. I keep the patches in the freezer and that helps. But unfortunately, each batch is different. I can get one batch that the backing comes off beautifully and the next batch will be horrible.

I am concerned about the adhesive backing when I am trying to remove the backing to apply the patch to my son. I have to pull so hard to remove the backing that some of the medication comes off. It is impossible to remove it without pulling it really hard and touching the sticky side. Should I return this batch to the pharmacy?

    dear lisa,
hello everyone. in kindergarten, my son failed many subjects and the teacher suggusted that he repeats kindergarten. i considered and agreed. so he repeated kindergarten at a different school. towards december of his kindergarten year he was diagnosed w/ ADHD and he was proficent in all subjects. Plus, his teacher thought he should be in the 1st grade. and that is when i felt that i made a mistake with holding him back. i felt that his adjusting curve was too slow and i really should have not kept him back and allowed him to adjust at his own pace in the grade of his actual age range. he is smart and he’s potential is amazingly great. your son has potential too. Encorage him, motivate him, give him your expectations to do well in school and make it a standard. Find a teacher that his very comfortable and aggressive with his diagnosis which is also a mental disorder. send him to a tutor and find tools for acive learning. yeah. find a teacher in the next grade who pracitces active learning and request that he is in that classroom. your child needs stimulation and holding him back might bore him. you have more options than holding him back a grade. be in powered and informed.Talk to the principal of the school too. I will never let my child fail a grade again. School is tough but your child can make it.- Aisha

Our 9yr old son was diagnosed with ADHD and we started on the Daytrana patches. We went that route because of the ease of being able to take it off and the medicine wear off. His behavior has gotten better, but we had to trial different doses before we got one that works. We’re on the 15mg patches now and seem to be okay for now. He is growing and has had some hints of puberty starting (acne, etc.) We may have to increase his dosage as puberty hits full out. This has been our worst year of school so far and I’m struggling with the possibility of holding him back. We are working with a psychologist who specializes with ADHD and I trust her greatly. She does not think we should hold him back. Any thoughts?

We had issues with peeling the backing off of the batch of 10mg patches that we started with, and I too, thought it was just me. We have had better success with the 15mg patches. I just thought we had a bad batch. Being a nurse, I know that can happen with certain medications and manufacturers. I haven’t tried the freezer for the adhesive issues. I’ll try that with his new batch of patches and see if it is easier.

Our son likes the patch because he has some control of it and he doesn’t have to swallow the medicine. We do have battles when he has to take a pill of any sort. He removes the patch when he gets to his after school program so that it is not on too long. With the first doses, we had to trial the removal time to get adequate coverage and adequate sleep.

We too have had issues with the patch causing a red “hicky” like area. We alternate hips and even go up higher on his waist area. He likes that better, because if the side of the patch “curls” up, it doesn’t come off with his underwear. We put lotion, or dry skin (hydrocortisone) ointment on the patch site at night after his shower and then again the next morning. The site clears up before it is time to put the patch there again. I haven’t tried his upper arms, I might try that too.

TO STEPHEN. MY SON IS ON DAYTRANA 10MG PATCH. HE IS NOT A ZOMBIE. HE’S CHILL BUT HAS FUN WHILE HE IS ON HIS MEDICATION. WHEN MEDICATED HE CAN STILL EXERT HIS FEELINGS GOOD AND BAD. HE IS STILL HIMSELF WITHOUT THE HYPERACTIVITY THAT PROHIBITS NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR THAT CAUSES HIM TO GET IN DEEP TROUBLE LIKE GETTING EXPELLED FR. SCHOOL, OR ANNOYING FAMILY MEMBERS AT THE DINNER TABLE AT A RESTRUANT. YOU JUST NEED TO FIND WHAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR YOU. YOU CAN CHANGE HIS DIET (NO CAFFINE, NO OR LOW SUGAR (LIMIT JUICE AND SODA TO 4OZ A DAY, NO ARTIFICIALS, AND ETC),BUY ORGANIC FOODS, LIMIT TELEVISION TO 30MIN/A DAY, INCREASE SLEEP TO 10 HOURS A DAY, OR SEND HIM TO PSYCOTHERAPY AND DO BEHAVIOR EXERCISES, SPEND MORE TIME W/ CHILD AND GIVE POSITIVE REENFORCEMENTS, LET THE CHILD POSITIVE BEHAVIOR POINTS FOR TO EARN PREVLIGES (NOT MATERIALISTIC THINGS). TRY IT. GOOD LUCK.
