I am just starting my oldest son on the patch. He is diagnosed with Autism. We are hoping that it will help control his outbursts.

My 7 year old son has been using the patch for approximately 7 months. It’s worked the best of anything we’ve tried so far (Strattera, Focalin, & extended release Focalin.) We do put it on him before he even wakes up for best results.
We’ve had the same frustrations with removing the backing. I called the company and the rep. explained to me how to remove the backing “properly” which frankly caused me to laugh out loud. I asked her if SHE had ever removed the back of a patch and she admitted she had not. Suggested she actually try what company is advising parents to do.
What I have found actually works best with removal is speed. We use some hemastats left over from an ER visit (kind of like tweezers which when closed will keep a tight grip), get a good grip and rip quickly. Works better than freezing, rolling, etc.
The GOOD news is that the last box we got (10 mg), EVERY patch has peeled off beautifully without any of the aforementioned theatrics. Maybe Shire has finally fixed the problem!!

My son was diagonosed ADD in fall of 2006, he went on the patch and within 4-5 days we were seeing results in the classroom as far as focusing and getting work done. His self esteem is fantastic because he can sit in class and get his work done. I put the patch on between 6-6:30 (school starts at 8:15) and we take it off at 3:00. I alternate hips and use cortizone for the skin irritation. He has been swimming and we have had no problems. His docter does not have him on the patch weekends, holidays or on summer vacations (main use is for focusing in school, we are very lucky that he does not have many of the problems associated with ADD).Less hungry at lunch, somewhat irrtiable in the evenings and energy surge at bedtime has been the only cons associated with the medication. He eats a larger breakfast and dinner,we upped his physical activity afte school but still not sure what to do about the irrtiablity issue (we were told that this might become a problem. Any ideas or comments? Thanks

It usually takes about 1 1/2 hours to kick in but I promise it is so worth it. You’ll get use to it.

I think you will be really happy with the patch once you get a batch that will come off the backing. Hang in there!

My daughter was just given her first ADHD medicine and it is the patch. I thought this was going to be the greatest thing. Unfortunately, I have had to open 4 patches to find one that will come off of the protective liner. I went to the pharmacy, but since it is sunday we are kind of stuck…he said he would do whatever it takes to help me with this. I am going to try putting them in the fridge and see if that helps. In response to Valerie on May 8th, I have the same lot number as you (2296311 exp 10-2008) and am wondering if there was a problem with this lot.

We are about to start using the patch, but I am really concerned about how long it takes for the medicine to kick in. We leave the house at 7 a.m. for school that starts at 7:30. His concerta kicks in in about 20 -30 minutes. Getting up to apply a patch at 5 a.m. is not going to work in the long term.

Tegaderm is a nexcare waterproof bandage. My son’s neurologist suggested them I got them at CVS. I hope it works for you.

    Amy,

I am not sure what tegaderm is but I have just used Bandaid brand large waterproof bandaids and they have stayed on with no problems. I think you should give it a try.

My son 9 has been on this patch for a year, we have had rash..which the nurse at school would put ice on his butt…or else i would get a call from school that he was acting out and could not sit down…then i would ask them to check his patch and as always he would have taken it off, then we got cream from the doctor to help with the rash….now he has some skin discolor on his butt or hip due to the itching and irritaion…now we are limited to the 30 a month thing..so i called to get the 40 free debt card which bypass the insurence and you get it from the company…they said to get me script for 30 days and an extra one for 10 extra patches the company will pay for….so i did and it works to have the extra….now one month i lost the whole box and looked everywheres…..so i got the card to get 30 free cause i could not afford to pay the price…well hubby was fixing his lunch for work and found the box of patches in the freezer, of all places,..i think my son put them there thinking the ice helps on his hip so maybe if he froze them it would not itch as bad….i have many storys….need any info i maybe can help you..email me at [personal details removed] …for the pack i found in the freezer..i still used them but i would not recomend you put them there…….lol……Taraha

What is tegaderm? Is it a type of tape or bandaid? Maybe I’ll try again. We were soooo disappointed. My son was very sad that they fell off.
