My Son has now been on the patch for two months and I have started putting triple antibiotic ointment on the patch site in the evening and this has helped tremendously with the irritaion. We also just opened a new box of 15mg with a new lot number and the backing has improved greatly. I also started putting the tegaderm over the patch when he swims and so far it has worked. I personally love the patch compared to the pills. My sons behavior has greatly improved and their is no moodiness as there was on the pills.

My two boys have been taking Metadate CD (a mixture of slow-release and quick-release ritalin) and it works very well for them. Our worst side-effect, however, is insomnia. My 10-year-old will stay up until midnight and get up at 6 am. When he is off the meds, he falls asleep much faster and sleeps longer. I wondered if anyone had experience with better sleep for their children with the patch.

Kimberly,
My son is on the 15mg patch. I use the Bandaid brand Large water block plus. I have not had any trouble with them coming off in the water or when he sweats playing baseball. My son was just put back on a pill because he all of the sudden started getting irritated where the patch goes. So we decided to put him on a pill form for a couple of weeks and then try the patch again. The only problem with him back on the pill is that he is a totally different child. The pill makes him very moody and he doesn’t want to do anything. He just kind of mopes around the house.

Hi,
My 8 yr old son is ADHD. We also had trouble with the backing on the 10 MG patches, but once he went to 20 MG they were fine. Our two problems are irritated skin and no appetite. We fixed the skin with Cortisone Plus 10 cream. We put it on right after the patch comes off and again at bedtime. By morning it’s just a little pink and does not itch at all. We have a pool and so far it has always stayed on…and he swims for hours everyday. As far as the eating (or NOT eating) it seems that maybe the food tastes funny to him while on the med. He takes a bite and then pushes it away. I wish I could give him a day off now and then but the withdrawl issues worry me.Kim

Well, we’re abandoning the patch. It fell off again today at swim practice, even with a waterproof bandaid over the top. I called Shire and they said all the same stuff: it won’t fall off swimming (uh, yes, it does) and they’re working on the adhesive. Can’t tell me when it will be improved. Pharmacist and doctor didn’t have any suggestions. So, we’re back to oral medication and deeply disappointed (and out $40).

We have had great success with our son on the patch too, and he seems to be eating like a horse now! The only complaint I have besides the backing (which putting it in the freezer for 10 min or so and trying not to touch it too much seems to help) is that my son now has nasal congestion when we take the patch off. Has anyone else had this? My husband seems to think it may be a rebound effect of some sort, since the patch also stimulates the epinephrine in the brain, so when you take it off the congestion starts and lasts a few days. Just curious if anyone else had this. Thanks.

We just started the patch on Saturday. My son swims competitively. He wore it to practice today, then changed for day care. Tonight when I went to take the patch off, it was no where to be found. I’m really disappointed; the product is supposed to stay on in the water. I guess tomorrow we’ll try a waterproof bandaid over the top.

What mg is your child on?? My son is on 20 mg and I had to use the big tegaderm in order to cover the entire patch. I too have now had different results when it comes to the swimming pool and the patch. The last time I took him to the pool, the patch stayed on but the tegaderm was halfway off. Then his patch stayed on about 3-4 more hours after that. What kind of waterproof bandaid do you use? Do you put more than one on to cover the entire patch? I talked to the doctor and he prescribed my son some pills for the days we want to go swimming. I’m not sure how I feel about it even though I did ask for it. The last time we tried a pill form, it was Focalin XR and it had to be compounded into a liquid because my son couln’t swallow a pill. Now the doctor prescribed the pill again but this time it isn’t a capsule like the Focalin XR. Instead it is a tablet of Methylphenidate. Does anyone have suggestions for getting my son to swallow a pill? With the Focalin XR I couldn’t cut it in half. Can I with this pill. Also I’m worried the pill will effect my son differetly than with the patch? Is this a possibility?

I have had mixed things happen in water or in the pool. One time I put a waterproof bandaid over the patch and it came off in the water. We went to Blue Bayou on Thursday and he had a waterproof bandaid over the patch, he rode water slides, and played in the water for about 4 hours and his patch and bandaid stayed on the entire time. I guess it just depends on how securely you put both the patch and bandaid on.

I also had problems with the patch coming off my son in the swimming pool. He has gone swimming 3 different times and each time the patch has come off. We tried tegaderm and waterproof tape over that to seal the edges but the patch still came off. Any suggestions? Also, we have to use tape to keep the patch on even during a regular day without swimming. Does anyone else have to do this? If I don’t put tape over the patch, it comes off or he itches it off. It takes about 1 1/2 hours before it kicks in.
