I am a pharmacist and am interested in learning what exactly happens to the patch when the backing cannot be removed. Does the medication come off on the backing or just the adhesive?

If anyone could provide me with a description I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Also, you can report this to an organization called the Insitute for Safe Medication Practices (www.ismp.org), they are a non-profit organization that reports issues like this to FDA and the drug’s manufacturer. They use reports like this in their newsletters and many product changes have been made as a result. The more reports a company receives the more likely they are to do something!!

My 7yr son has been on the patch now for a little over a month (15mg) and he has improved by four reading levels in school since that time. The teachers also love the difference in Noah. He was previously on Adderall then Focalin. We are having the same problem in the pool the patch has come off both times we went swimming this year. The doctor has suggested buying the water proof bandages and putting them over the patch. We are going to try this soon but I am also very disappointed about the patch not working in the pool. My son spends almost the whole summer in the pool. I am interested in hearing others solutions for the pool.

My 10 year old son has been on the patch for almost 2 months. They are wonderful. I have not really had any trouble with the adhesive sticking. Every now and then I start to peel the backing off and it looks like it wants to pull the medication off, I just press the backing back down and hold it a few seconds and it seems to help with the release of it. My only concern is how long it takes for the medicine to take effect. I wish we didn’t have to get up two hours before going somewhere to put his patch. We started him on the patch 1 week before LEAP test in Louisiana, I was a little scared to do at that time. We received his results and he scored Advanced in one subject(highest you can get) and Mastery in 3 subjects. Out of 86 4th graders, he ranked 2nd on his test. I am so glad that we swithced to the patch. His teachers said that he is a totally different child. He was on 25mg of Aderall, we are now on 15mg of Daytrana. My son is very active in sports, and we had one instance where the patch came off in the shower. I purchased waterproof bandaids to put over the patch while playing sports, because of the sweating. That has helped. We have not tried swimming yet. I cannot say enough good things about the patch. I have been trying to show him how to put the patch on, he is having trouble. I am going to try to show him how to pull the backing off like a bandaid and then apply it. I was showin him how to pull back one side, apply it on the hip and then remove the other half of the backing.

Our 9 year old son has been on the patch for 4 months. We also had horrible problems with the intial batch of 10 mgs. Plus 10mgs were not strong enough-that first month was rough! RX was increased to 20mgs & is working well. He had been on Adderall(made him way to emotional), ritalin, (Caused tics) & Focalin. We mainly switched to the patch because he can’t swallow a pill.
But now I have found a new problem. Three times so far this year he has gone swimming. All 3 times the patch has peeled right off-with in a few minutes. He is not picking at it, nor is his swim suit rubbing it off. He has gone swimming in the same pool all three times. They use a different chemical than chlorine-baquacil maybe. And I’m sure I didn’t spell that right. I don’t know if that would have anything to do with it or not. I am so disappointed. We love to swim & this is really going to be a problem if he can’t do so while on meds. Any suggestions?

That backing removal problem has got to be fixed.I know there are good delivery patches for medications but Shire must not want to put the extra money into the good ones till Daytrana makes them some money first.I end up with as much glue on my fingers as he does on his hip.Medication results are very good. Call Shire in PA,USA and all you get is Hype and coupons.Letters are better than phone calls for results.

My 9 year old initially had difficulty tolerating the patch due to sensory defensiveness, however, once she wore it to school, she came home and remarked, “Mommy, I want to wear that patch everyday because I am more functional”
I almost fell over. Apparently she is blossoming. Participates in class, stays on task, is conscientious, completes work, independently and in a timely fashion. Socially, she is more at ease, less fearful. Gone are the tearful days of trepidation.
She even applies her patch each morning!! We place it in the freezer for a few minutes so that the backing peels off easily. This was recommended by Shire, following our complaints of wasting the patches. (not to mention the time in trying to remove them as well)
I highly recommend using medication. I attempted non-traditional and homeopathic alternatives with my first child (her older sister by 7 years) and it has definitely affected her disposition and life choices. From my experience, it seems when treated earlier, there is less social alienation and improved academic performance with pharmaceutical intervention. good luck!

Try putting it on him in the morning right before he wakes up completely when he is less active.

Today was the first day that I wrestled with the Daytrana patch. My son has been taking Concerta for three years. I have also tried Adderall and Ritalin. Neither of them worked as well as the Concerta for my ADHD son. He is 11 years old and asked me if he could switch to the patch after reading about it. I researched it and discussed it with my pediatrician who agreed to the change since he was due for an increase in his dosage. Today was horrible. I fought with the patch as most of you have first thing in the morning. The doctor suggested two 10 mg patches for him as a start. Completely ineffective. It was like a flashback from four years ago before he was diagnosed and treatment began. I don’t know if I should give it again tomorrow or go back to the Concerta. Did it take anyone out there more than one day to see the effects? I’m discouraged.

We were so excited to try the patch on our EXTREMELY hyperactive 8 year old this morning. No backing problems but we could not get him to hold still long enough to get it on properly and hold it for 30 seconds. These are hyperactive kids, right? After almost two hours of chasing after our son jumping, screaming, playing, and acting totally wild, we decided to put another one on, as the doctor advised. After 30 minutes, I looked at both of them and through all his activity of rolling around on the floor, etc, they had almost peeled completely off! I promptly removed them and gave him 10 mg of instant release Focalin to get him to settle down somewhat. HOW do you get them to hold still for application? What do you do with all the hyperactivity while you are waiting for the effects? HELP–we were so excited to try it!

Our son 6 has been on patch for 6 months, it has helped for sure. The only issue left is his verbal abuse at times and ease of frustration towards others. Any medications anyone can suggest?
    Thanks
