We have been using the Daytrana patch for about 6 weeks now with my 13-year-old. As far as results, the combativeness experienced when my son was on the Aderall XR has all but disappeared and his sweet, funny side has re-appeared. However, the patch put out by Shire is the worst I have ever worked with, and I have used a patch for delivery of other medications, including HRT. None has worked anywhere as poorly as the Daytrana patch. I have no idea if my son is getting the correct dosage because SO MUCH is either left on the backing or ends up on my hands. The patches in the two batches we’ve purchased DO NOT come off the backing easily at all. After some 15 years of using patches with other medications makes me wonder how Shire/Noven could have done such a bad job with a proven method of delivery.

My son has just started the Daytrana patch and we also have had MANY problems with liner removal. There are contrary discussions here which state that warmth help; but then others say it does not. I have also called the Shire tech service helpline and they advised that “there are lot to lot differences and they have heard some reports and also advised me of the “wave technique”. This breaks the structure of the adhesive from the liner. This still does not work for me, and when my hubby tries it, he is very aggressive with teh bending of it bit is able to get it to remove, but it still transfers the adhesive to the liner. I took the first all 9 inferior patches and the individual packages back to the pharmacy and explained my frustration and asked for a replacement. Please note, that i fyou toss the actual patch, they wil lnot give yaou a replacement. Due to Gov’t regulations, they had to call Shire ( and got the same guy I talked to twice, and are sending in the bad patches for anazlysis.) I wonder what lot number you folks have? My opriginal and replacement lot number is: 2296311, Expires : 10/2008. I have a call in my Ped for more advice of refridgeration. Anyone know their lot number??

If you have problems with patch - you can call Shire and request a 40 patch card/coupon.

If you find your child is extra emotional or irritable after the 9 hours when the patch has worn off it is withdrawl.

Ask your doctor about a small dose of ritalin-type medicine to help with the transition. They call it a softer landing.

It has made all the difference of pleasant evening for all. :)

***** NO PROBLEMS WITH BACKING WHEN PATCH IS COLD *****

    >>> SET ALARM 1 HOUR EARLY AND APPLY PATCH
The patch takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours to reach maxium effectiveness.

+++++ BETTER RESULTS WHEN PATCH IS ON LESS “FATTY” PART OF HIP +++++

//// APPLY PATCH LENGTH WAYS UP - NARROW - VERTICAL - TO ALLOW FOR MORE SITES IN OPTIUM AREAS FOR APPLICATION //// If you apply long ways you will find that the optium areas (least fatty part of hips) has irrartion from previous days application and then one is forced to put over irratation or on buttocks - neither a good option.

My daughter recently started on the Daytrana patch, and we quickly became frustrated with trying to get the backing off as well. I complained to the company and they gave me tips for removing the backing that did not help at all. I finally called my pediatrician who said it was okay to put the patch in the freezer for 30 minutes before applying (does not affect the medication). Be sure to remove the patch from the pouch first before putting in the freezer. It makes all the difference. It is now very easy to remove the backing. I understand that the newer lots have been improved and will not be as difficult to use — looking forward to that!

How are you all dealing with the irritation. My 9yo daughter sometimes is irritated so badly by the patch during the day that she scratches until it comes off. Of course when she is at school, that is a disaster. HELP!!! This is the only med that has worked for her. She has been on everything else.

I have found if you place the patch in the refrigerator for 5 to 10 min it is much easier to peal of the backing. Also, don’t press it between your fingers. The heat generated by your fingers makes the backing sticky and hard to peal off.

My son just started this medication on Tues, hard time finding in pharmacies,1 pharmacy even told me to ask my dr to put him back on the pill form because it is backordered and they are not telling them when they will get it in. My son has tried every medication , has been to neurologist/psychologist/psychiatrist, he is 12 and I dislike school more than him. we have been on a long journey , I have read the bipolar child,I have struggled to find out if it is add adhd depression anxiety, aspergers, bipolar, what is the problem with my intelligent child who cannot make friends and struggles in a social environment-impulsive,tempermental,no one wants to drug their child but no one wants their child to deal with teasing and a low self esteem, I pray for my child everynight,i finally went to the daytrana 10mg,with risperdal .25 bid, 7am patch on 3;30 patch off , 7am&7pm risperdal, he had 2 poor sleeping nites and I am making him eat regardless if he feels hungry, things have been working,I hope he does not get tolerant or have problems with changing chemicals when puberty hits, for now this medicine has worked, yes only 4 days but I got a call from his teacher, calls i dread but this was to tell me what a great week he had, that his handwriting improved & they were able to hold a logical conversation w/him i gave him a math sheet to do , usually 1hr , took him 10 minutes & only 2 errors & no complaints, please dear Lord let this be safe & the answer for my son.

First day using Daytrana for our 12 year old son. We have tried practically every ADHD med on the market. Praying that this is the answer for him. We too went thru 3 patches of the 10mg dose this morning before even beginning to be able to remove the backing. Spoke with Shire and as many have noted, they are aware of the problem. Yes, sending coupons for more, but need another prescription. Our son will be moving up to 15mg in about 10 days, and I tried opening one of the patches and removed the backing with no problem, so it seems the 10mg are the most problematic for backing issues. I sure hope we have good results with this patch. He’s so… forgetful and disorganized and will be going into 7th grade so we desperately need help. Been dealing with ADHD since 2nd grade.
