Every where I have read on side effects of using the patch it says “may decrease appetite” My grandson has been using the patch for about 3 months and I absolutely can not fill the child up. He will eat 4 times between 7:00 A.M. and 12:00 noon. He has lunch around 1:00 and eats a good balanced lunch but by dinner time he is not hungry. A few hours after taking the patch off he is hungry, usually just before bed time. He has not gained any weight though. He is 8 Yrs old and weighs 51.5 lbs. He sleeps very good, usually 10 hours straight. He does have a red spot when I remove the patch and sometimes it itches and he can not wait until it is time to remove it. Overall the patch has been wonderful and he has improved so much in school. He was on Adderal before the patch. My only problem is getting the backing off the patch. It says to store at 77 degrees FH so putting them in the fridge is not a good idea.

We discovered something that may help others struggling with these patches: it seems that the adhesive is *very* temperature sensitive and reacts to heat *very* quickly. If you cut open the envelope and don’t touch the patch (or the envelope even near the patch) until the very last second necessary, and then just by the corner, it seems to make removing the backing from the center outward much easier. Others report that putting the patch in the freezer for a few seconds helps with the release. I did speak with someone from the company’s customer support, and they said they’re making some changes that will improve ease of removing the backing, and that the changes are now taking place in the manufacturing process and will be on the market shortly.

I got one to work the first day, but was concerned due to the smearing of the adhesive. So I tried another one to see if I could do better. I didn’t. I ended up taking 1/8 of the adhesive off. I called Shire and they said to do this wave thing. It didn’t help me the next day. I went through five that I threw away. The only thing the wave would do would warm the adhesive up and so in one of the attempts I tried making sure it was warmer by holding it between my hands. That one was the worst. I then got to thinking. Adhesive typically adheres less and is more stiff at colder temperatures. I put the patch in the pouch in the freezer for about 15 minutes. When I quickly took it out and quickly peeled the backing off, it came off without a problem. The only thing is that I don’t know how much the cold will affect the adhesive, the medication, the medication in the adhesive, whether or not the dosing will change, or if the patch will stay on properly. So far, it seems to be working. I still need to ask Shire if a 15 minute “excusion” to -10 degrees C is acceptable. If this isn’t well, then they need to remake there patch.

My daughter has been using the patch for almost 6 months and the first box of the pactch that we got was horrible! I had to rub the patch in between my hands for a few seconds, then bend the patch back and forth several times before the backing would come off. Since then, the boxes of patches that I’ve received have great! Not a problem at all with the backing. Perhaps it wasn’t a fresh box????? (if that makes any sense……)

My husband has been using the patch for about two month and enjoys the degree of focus it has given him-more than any other treatment. So much so that he decided to just live with the skin irritation. However, he has been progressively unable to get any restful sleep even with taking Trazadone before bedtime. The Trazadone has helped him with his life-long sleep problem for the past 5+ years, until he began the Daytrana. Use of OTC sleeping pills have not improved his ability to achieve restful, long-lasting sleep. Yesterday he skipped the patch, which results in major anxiety and confusion, stayed home from work and is sleeping now…I hope productively.

We too have been having trouble removing the backing before application. It does not make mornings any more pleasant, struggling with these things. Once we get it on, pressing on it for 30 seconds as reccomended seems to get it to stay on. But are there any tips for removing the backing? From what I’ve read elsewhere, it’s a known problem, and the company sometimes sends replacements, but that’s a pain, because then we have to get a new prescription (can only get 30 day supply at a time where we are).

I also have ruined patches, while trying to remove the backing. The patches work great, once they are on, it’s just getting them on. Sometimes, thru the edges like to peel back, so I have taken alittle tape to the edges. He also on some days has some itching. What do you do about this? ANY IDEAS? thanks

I do agree that when we first started using this, we had issues removing the backing. If you try not to touch it with extremely warm hands or just touch the edges you are fine. If you apply the patch like a band-aid and not one side at a time it is also easier. I think that if they had tabs like on band-aids it would be easier yet. BABY OIL and a COTTON BALL are the easiest when it comes to removing the adhesive. And don’t attempt to remove the adhesive right away; it’s easier the next day. The skin irritation on some days is worse, and itching has caused the patch to be removed early a few times. But overall this is the best thing we have found yet. The teachers agree, and they know when he gets his patch later than usual.
