Recovering From a Direct Lightning Strike On Our Data Centre

avatar image

This year, we marked the summer solstice with a direct lightning strike on the data centre which houses our server. Fortunately, all data stayed safe, but network connectivity was absent for about an hour and remained dicey for a few hours after that. So, if you happen to have tried getting in touch with us on the 21st of June, and received an error or an email bounce, that will be why. And if you haven’t been doing it regularly yet, we highly recommend our articles on the importance of backups, backups, backups!

If you received an error message or an email bounce while trying to get in touch with us or access the site on 21st June, please give us another try — we’ve recovered from the direct lightning strike on our data centre that marked the arrival of Summer 2006.

All data remain completely safe, but experiencing a direct lightning strike certainly does remind me of the importance of a solid backup strategy: see our article on backup strategy for your private practice, as well as our brief introduction to backup basics.

If you haven’t started doing it regularly yet, my advice to anybody who uses a computer (mental health professional, general consumer, 12-year old child, talented parrot) is the same: backup, backup, backup!
