My son had problems with daydreaming and inattention in school for years, but it really got bad in 5th and 6th grade. His teachers were pushing me to get him diagnosed with ADHD. I have a stepson who has been diagnosed with ADHD and had horrible side effects with medications and nothing has really helped him, he still receives Cs and Ds in school, and his growth is severely stunted (unfortunately we have not control over his treatment, we only have custody during the summer). After researching natural products, I started giving my son fish oil capsules(1000mg twice daily). He didn’t like the fishy taste, so I gave him flax oil capsules instead. It takes awhile to work, about 1-2 months, but it does work. We also did cognitive skills training over the summer at home. It is his first year in middle school and he is doing great. He can sit down and do his homework without constant supervision. He pays better attention in class and is less emotional. One of the best things is that now he gets As and Bs instead of Cs and Ds. The change is absolutely amazing! I highly recommend Omega 3 oils, whether in fish oil or plant form, such as Flax or Borage oil. My son also takes a children’s multivitamin.

I was wondering what ratio of DHA to EPA you are all using? And, do you add vitamin E to the diet as well? I heard it is supposed to help with protecting the fish oils.
My son has inattentive ADHD and we are trying the fish oil approach. We tried concerta for one day and never went back after the terrible reaction my son had in just one day.
Thanks, Kim -

what is the ratio of the oils in the fish oil capsules that you guys are taking? I see that there is a large difference in brands as far as the ratios go.

My son has ADHD and is on Concerta 54mg. I now have him taking 2000 mg of fish oil also. I hope to see an improvement in his school work within a couple of weeks. I find that keeping it in the freezer helps with the “fish” taste and fish burps.

Ann, My 9y. old son was diagnosed in Nov.’06 with ADHD. I was very against meds. My MD recommended Fish oil, it did improve his disposition, but in Feb.’07 we started him on Focalin XR and it worked great but started wearing off around 2pm after a few months. We have just stared using the Daytrana patch and have trouble with removing the backing also, freezing it for a few minutes seems to help, Jury is still out on the effectiveness of the patch for us. We use Coromega fish oil it’s a pudding like alternative to capsules and my son loves it. It comes in Orange and chocolate orange flavor. One packet every day, has 2000mg of oils. My whole family takes it. Good luck!

Barbara, my son is entering the 9th grade this year and has strugled hrough school to get to this point. I have thought for a few years now he my have ADHD but because he doesn’t have a discipline problem, I figured I must be off base. I recently had him tested and the doctor said yes he does have ADHD and within 10 minutes of meeting him wanted to put him on ritalin. My response was no way, not that quickly. I have heard about the fish oil before and would like to give it a try. Like your son, my son is very fit (black belt) with very low body fat. What type of fish oil do you use and what is the dosage. I can’t seem to find a good site that tells me about dosage for his age. Thanks

My son who is currently in grade 9 has been diagnosed with ADHD in early elementary grades. During that time I had visited numerous doctors, peaditricians, accupuncurist, homeopathic doctors and no one has ever suggested fatty acids supplements.
This year I had started to give him 3 tablespoons of flax seeds and I had noticed improvement in his grades. Then a month ago I started giving him salmon oil and the results are amazing. His report card marks turned from C’s and D’s into A’s and B’s. I have also noticed that neatness of his writing and organizational skills have improved greatly. Perhaps, this info may help other parents who are struggling with their kids add or ADHD.
From my experience md doctors know nothing of the benefits of fish oils, so do not be discouraged if they give you strange look.
My son has very low body fat index, so for him fish oil seems to be an an anwser, however for other kids the other supplements can be more suitable. If you would like to know more about that please go to the website mdheal.org it has many wonderful info about ADHD.

I have a neice who takes these, my brother buys See Yourself Well from [advertisement deleted]. I asked him about them, she doesn’t have any trouble taking them and he’s been told they have a kids product on it’s way.

If your kids have a hard time swallowing fishy pills, try giving them Nordic Naturals. My nephew actually takes them over candy or toys (true story). The best part is it is all natural and so pure.
I know they will send a sample if you contact them. I have all my family on Nordic Naturals.
