I haven’t experienced problems with my son falling asleep. I don’t make him use the patch when he doesn’t have school.

my son doesnt seem as bad on his days off as he did before the patch! he does however make his silly noises, falls off the chair b/c he cant stop moving, but he does’nt seem as impulsive! my son did well in school before the patch. he is socially getting along better now and his writing has improved tremendously. i put the patch on at home to improve the quality of life within. he also gets along better with his sister. he will walk into a room and remember why he went in there! maybe i should try it!

When he doesn’t have the patch on he is tolerable. He is very impulsive and that’s not good for the school environment, where as to at home, I’m able to better deal with him;so it’s not really an issue so much.

My 8 year old started the Daytrana patch in November. What a wonderful impact it had! No major irritation, just a little red area when it was removed and it was gone by morning. He made great strides in school and his teacher was very pleased with his performance.

We’ve been getting 10 packs–10mg then 20mg then 15mg while trying to get the right amount. 10mg didn’t put a dent in his impulsivity. 20mg worked but he was getting sporadic headaches (almost migranes) so we backed down to 15mg. The last three lots (1-20mg and 2-15mg) have all had issues with the backing. Along with that instead of the mild irritation that was gone the next day the reaction was much worse. Swelling that doesn’t go down for days and extremely dry skin.

We called Shire and the first time they indicated they knew there was an issue. I called yesterday with additional questions and the person I spoke with indicated there were no problems. Our pharmacist and doctor have both indicated the Shire rep had told them there were manufacturing issues and there may be adverse reactions to the adhesive. This concerns me because the med is delivered via the adhesive. If there have been manufacturing issues with the adhesive what impact can that have on the med and it’s delivery? Especially if you can’t get it all off the backing?

This has been a wonderful medication for our family, however until Shire gets their manufacturing issues under control we’re going to have to take our son off the med. I’m concerned that he will become hypersensitive to any type of bandage adhesive.

If anyone else has had issues with the backing I would recommend they call Shire and report the problem. By law they must also report this to the FDA. I have called Shire, reported the adverse reaction to the FDA via http://www.fda.gov/medwatch myself and let my doctor and pharmacist know we’ve had a problem. I’m sincerely hoping they get this corrected. I’d really like to put my son back on this method of delivery for methylphenidate. It’s had the greatest benefits by far with the least side effects until this change in the adhesive.

Three days ago my son switched from Adderall XR to Daytrana for ADHD with impulsivity. He is also taking Trileptal because he is bi-polar. We found out he was bi-polar by having a brain SPECT scan at the Amen Clinic (www.brainplace.com)because he had angry ADHD (“Ring of Fire”) symptoms. That scan helped us find out what was going on in his brain by literally taking a scan of his brain which showed us which parts of the brain were overactive and which were underactive so that we could better medicate him. We not only found out that he had “Ring of Fire” ADHD and bi-polar but also ODD, anxiety, and some traits of Aspberger’s Syndrome. It took me 7 years before I heard him say, “Momma, I love you!” It wasn’t covered by insurance but some do cover it, but it was a small price to pay for my sanity. He started using Daytrana and have had problems getting the backing off too. The company says to store the patches at 77 degrees but how many people have their homes set this high? I used Ortho Evra patches for birth control and never had a problem with the backing coming off, the adhesive, irritation, nothing. They have to stay in place for a week and can be worn in the shower daily and never come off. It is made by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc. What does Ortho-McNeil know about adhesives that Shire does not? Seems like the two companies should be working together.

I’m a 23 year old female whom has been on the 15mg patch for the past four months and find it to be wonderful. I am able to control when I need it the most which is during my work hours of 6-6. In the beginning I did have trouble removing the patch from its package. I discovered from my doctor that if you place it in the freezer for about two second no more.. it will pill away easily.

Wow! I googled deep to get to this site, and I thank you so much for its existence. I wanted to find a site not sponsored by the drug companies.
My son (9 almost 10) was diagnosed with ADHD over last summer 2006. He was taking Concerta 27 mg and his behaviour and school performance improved dramatically. But in a matter of about 1 week he dropped from 59lbs to 54lbs and looked emaciated. He had bad circulation and no appetite, plus increased insomnia. Our Phsyciatrist was skeptical when I mentioned the patch as a way to give more flexibility and hopefully work on the appetite. Our Pediatrician said he had spotty results with his other patients but agreed that we should try it. So we did 10 mg at first, with not much improvement although he said he felt calm. We parents noticed it was not as good as on the Concerta 27 mg. Thanks to the free trial card we increased next week to 15 mg and it is perfect! He still has a bit of a problem falling asleep at night so we try to take it off at 4pm for an 8:30 pm bedtime. Note that my son has had trouble falling asleep since toddlerhood. With the flexibility of the patch we are able to get him to eat a good breakfast, snack when returning from school and a much better dinner. His appetite during the day is erratic, but he is definitely gaining weight again! We are back up to 57lbs. He agrees that 15mgs is the right dose for him, better than the 10mg patch: “I feel calmer and can sit more in school.” I am so pleased that he can take the same medication delivered directly into the bloodstream, and at a lower dose. I hate the idea of drugging my child but it has make a huge impact on his self esteem and our family life is greatly improved.

If I could, I would give him melatonin at bedtime. Any tips ? Can it be ground up and put in something? Anyway, thanks to all of you who shared your stories and concerns, Its so nice to know I am not in isolation on this experience.
