I’m an adult with ADHD, and I too have had a lot of trouble with the medication peeling off with the Daytrana backing. But when it works, it’s great not having the up-and-down effect you get with oral methylphenidate, even the long-acting kinds. And it’s great being able to eat without worrying how meals will interact with the medication.
I’ve reported my experiences to Shire, and the company was good enough to send me another 40-patch coupon. I’ve also talked to several pharmacists, and they’ve confirmed that other customers have had problems. But neither the company nor the pharmacists had any suggestions that seemed to work for dealing with the bad patches.
I noticed that when I took the bad patches back to the store to show the pharmacist, lo and behold, the backing came off just fine. With some trial and error, I figured out I had to store the patches in a room I could keep very warm overnight and then peel them there in the morning. The medication would peel off if the room was even a little cool. It had to be like mid-70s.
For my second batch of patches, the pharmacy gave me four 10-patch boxes. Three of the boxes have been fine. But in one box, eight of 10 patches were unusable, even kept and peeled in the warm room. The lot number on the bad box is 1934311, which I reported to Shire. The lot number on the other three boxes (the good ones) is 2192212, also which I reported. So maybe check the lot number and ask your pharmacist for a box from a different lot if necessary.

Hello everyone. Have a few comments about the patch. I too have had issues with getting the liner off the backing. I reported this to my doctor and he told me that Shire has a brand new batch of patches hitting the market shortly that are a huge improvement over the current patches. I didn’t care one way or the other because Daytrana worked half as well as the adderall did. I am 34 years old, take adderall xr 30mg. I tried Daytrana to see if Ritalin worked as well, better, or not as well. For me, Ritalin was just sedating, whereas Adderall XR calms me down while not making me feel sedated. The only way to explain it is that I feel more “normal” with adderall xr. I just wanted to pass on the information about Daytrana because I feel so bad about all of you who do like Daytrana for your children and the darn liners don’t work well.
I would add that a friend of my wife says that her son is on Daytrana 20mg. Before he was on Concerta and it wasn’t lasting long enough. He then tried Focalin XR and that wore off even sooner than the concerta and he had sleep issues. I guess it was about that time that the doctor tried Daytrana because the rep told him that he could take the patch off sooner if the kid wasn’t sleeping and that it should last longer no problem than both Concerta or Focalin XR. One wonders why the darn doc didn’t try daytrana in the beginning. So, she has her son on 20mg of Daytrana and the little squirt is doing awesome. Says it lasts at least 12 hours. I wonder how long it is before my wife’s friend starts taking the kids patches. haha. And get this, kids skin was getting red and the doc recommended using olive-oil based soaps because most soaps dry out your skin and the drier the skin the more prone to skin irritation you become. Made all the difference in the world. It’s only pink now, not red.
I’m still not sure what these drugs actually do, but damn, they sure do something good.
Good luck to everyone
Now if I can only get my wife on something, maybe I could watch the basketball in peace =) -

I just wanted to let you know and everyone else….that I am taking Alexis off all add med’s… She is not adhd or add… she is Alexis… and if her day dreaming gets in the way, we will deal with it…. I will never put her on any mind altering med’s again… she gets angry and says she took a wrong turn in life and wants to die (she is 8 years old and we want to keep her)…. I hold her and ask her if she can think of anything good to replace what she is feeling at the time she is coming down off the very low dose of ADD MED…(Concerta 18 mg or Daytrana 10 mg we have tried both)… she cant think of anything good at all ??? We do things at least once or twice a week outside the home….this doesn’t include the activities inside the home (puzzles, art, movies, cooking, etc) Add is destroying my beautiful daughters mind…. yes, she is more outgoing….her grade are still the same off or on….. but she is not Alexis…. sweet, energetic, never does anything bad, very artistic, and shy…..
I want my daughter back…. and now dad is getting involved after her last episode of coming down…. We are keeping logs and writing things down…. I want to write a book…. they need to put these drugs right up there with smoking and drinking.. (with huge warnings) we are destroying our kids… with appoints to the psychiatrist and med’s… all in the name of straight a’s and/or an outgoing personality … so the family and/or the school can look good….Everyone uses “if she were diabetic you would give her medicine wouldn’t you ?” That’s the phrase that made me feel guilty and started the ball rolling…… hers the my thought now… she’s not diabetic (a real testable problem ) Add is not a testable problem… I now wonder what would have happened if we had put some of the world greatest inventors, composers, actors, and artist, etc …on ADD med’s….Do a Google search on famous with ADD traits (these are all great people) Why would we want to DRUG those traits??? So what if our children get c’s or low b’s…. They can still be great !!!…. All A’s mean nothing…..God made us all different and that’s a wonderful thing!!!…. Some of our greatest people made all c’s…..Also Google school shootings… most of the violence is while the child is on ADD med’s … We need to love our kids and enjoy them the way they are….we just don’t care about “ADD” anymore… I like her the way she is and I’m not doing it anymore…. 3-5-2007Angela in Indiana

I have ADHD and have been asking my parents about the patch. I would like to know if you can get a prescription for the patch in your local pharmacist. I know this won’t be the same for all pharmacists, but I would like a comment back on how to get access for this medicine. I am currently on Concerta 36mg, it’s helping me, though I am noticing that I can’t stay focused/calm all the way to the end of the day. Please give a comment back!

I have two sons age 5 and 8 who have severe adhd. They have both been on every medication out there for adhd and nothing has worked. When the patch came out it was a blessing to my family. It works wonders on both my boys. The only complaint I have is getting the adhesive off there skin. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

My grandson is on the patch and has trouble getting it pulled a part in the mornings. He is also , bothered with itching real bad , but the patch work good for him better than the pills, we have tried all of them. Maybe the Shire company will improve this problem soon.

I am having a really hard time removing the backing off the 20 MG Daytrana Patch. I simply can’t do it. I have read all over the discussion boards from tweezers, putting it in the frig, the Shire rep guaranteed that a wave movement would help. Nothing works! I have even tried 3 boxes. Shire customer service refuses to admit that some how the patches could be defective, but I can’t imagine that the backing is supposed to be this difficult. I have heard rumors that excessive heat might effect the patch, and another rumor that Shire has changed the formula and a better batch is now available. Does anyone have any solid information they can point me to other than a rumor or a guess? I GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY FEEDBACK!

My son is 14 and has been on Foclain 10mg for a couple of years. Before that he was on Concerta which worked really well for a few years. He is in 9th grade and this year his grades have been terrible. His attitude is terrible and he is always very unhappy. He doesn’t eat very much while on the med. His Dr. tried him on 20mg. of Foclain but I saw no diffence. He has just started on Daytrana 20mg. 3 days ago. So far he seems to like it. He said that he was able to eat his lunch and that he had “his personality back” and was able to concentrate. I pray that this is our answer. We have had the patched peeling very differently. I was not sure which way it was suppose to be, extremely sticky (med. coming off with backing) or backing coming off easily but having to rub patch for a few minutes to make it stick. I will try the freezer trick in the morning and see how it works. So far that is the only down side to the patch. Time will tell with the grades.

Has anyone ever cut the patch in half for half the dosage? My grandson has just started using the 10 mg. patch and has trouble falling asleep. I saw a comment on another site that the patch was cut in thirds, then half, then three-fourths and worked up to a whole patch. However, the information on the manufacturer’s site says not to cut it.

My son’s doctor also recommended putting the patch in the freezer to make it easier to peel but did not state for how long. We will try it tomorrow morning.
