Tools for Practitioners: Backup Drives
Following our popular articles on creating a backup strategy for your private practice, we review two leading contenders for the external backup drive of choice. Although the LaCie and Maxtor drives we tested were very similar in some respects, important differences in speed and in bundled software mean the two are most appropriate for different groups of users.
As part of our regular series on tools for building your therapy practice, two recent articles covered the basics of backup in terms of how to make them and where to store them.
We’ve just finished reviewing two of the best external hard drives currently available — the LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface and the Maxtor One Touch II FireWire and USB, both with a capacity of 300GB. While the LaCie currently offers faster and quieter operation, the Maxtor comes bundled with the industry standard backup software Dantz Retrospect Express.
The bottom line is that if you’d like the fastest, quietest operation, the LaCie may be the drive for you; while if you specifically want to use Retrospect Express, the Maxtor is definitely the better value. See the review for more details!
