New Home for Personality Disorders Foundation Materials
As the former Personality Disorders Foundation disappears from the web today, we have arranged with the University of Connecticut to provide a new home for many of the materials collected by the organization — including their extensive personality disorders research bibliographies and an introduction to the impact of personality disorders. The new materials appear in our bibliography section and our section on identifying psychological symptoms.
The Personality Disorders Foundation was a 501c(3) not-for-profit organization created in late 1997 at the University of Connecticut Health Center to promote significant progress in the research and treatment of severe personality disorders, including Borderline, Dependent, Antisocial, Schizotypal, and Narcissistic Personality Disorders. Elise Kabela-Cormier, Ph.D., who eventually became Foundation vice president, helped to administer the Foundation from its inception as a web-based entity. With the Foundation dissolving and its web presence removed at the end of September 2005, CounsellingResource.com stepped in — with permission — to preserve the research materials and consumer information which had been collected by the organization during its 8 years in existence.
You can find the organization’s extensive bibliography on personality disorders appears in our research bibliography, while our section on types of psychological distress includes more information about the Foundation, their introduction to the impact of personality disorders as well as a brief summary of what personality disorders are.
As the organization points out in its impact article:
People with severe personality disorders are high-cost, persistent, and intensive users of mental health services. One in every 20 individuals suffers with a personality disorder. Up to 10% of those in outpatient mental health treatment clinics have a personality disorder, and almost 15% of individuals in inpatient psychiatric care have a severe personality disorder.
