After his recent success with the special called Testing God — dubbed the most challenging and intellectually stimulating series of the year by the Financial Times and called "as close to poetry as television gets" by The Times — producer David Malone has returned to Channel 4 with a sequel.
Soul Searching is that sequel. Beginning where Testing God left off, Soul Searching is in two parts. The first is about the ‘Self’ and features question like what is it?, when was the modern self ‘invented’? and is our worldly self all there is to us? Film two of the series asks if there is some other ‘deeper’, less worldly part of us that in the past has been called the ‘Soul’, the part of us we associate with inspiration and creativity.
The series features some of the most insightful thinkers around today. Those who have already seen ’sneak previews’ of the series are impressed; Harold Bloom, the literary critic who features in film one, said he ‘admired’ it. Greg Chaitin, one of the most celebrated mathematicians of his generation and who is central to film two, said he felt it was an important series.
Producer David Malone says:
So if this sounds like your cup of tea, please watch and please pass on the details to others who might also be interested. The accepted wisdom in broadcasting is that there is no real audience for this sort of — what they call ‘high brow’ — television. Only by proving to them that there is a larger audience than they think do we stand a chance of convincing the broadcasters to continue with this sort of programming in future… I hope something in the series speaks to you.
Managing Editor Dr Greg Mulhauser features briefly to discuss the self and its relationship with the inner sources of creativity and insight. Work on the documentary film began over one year ago, when Dr Mulhauser was employed at BTexact Technologies; he was invited to participate to highlight his research on the self and our conscious experience.
You can learn more about Greg Mulhauser’s work on information theory, human consciousness and more in the Research section of the Mulhauser Consulting web site. And remember, the same site is providing a dedicated forum for visitors to comment on and discuss this unusual documentary film.
