Should I See One Counselor at School and Another at Home?

Reader’s Question

Q:

I am a little concerned about something related to counselling and have a couple of questions. I was wondering if you might help with them. I was seeing one counsellor for about a year and a half before deciding to go to school in another city. The decision to go away to school was so abrupt that I did not have time to finish the counselling. I also wanted to continue. I have been going back during school breaks (one week in the fall, and over the Christmas holidays). I am not sure whether that is appropriate, considering that I am not sure that I will return to my city when my program ends in April. In the meantime, I also ended up talking to a counsellor at school, as I have been unhappy there as well and wanted to have someone to speak to, as well as to continue the work that I had begun with the other counsellor. What is your opinion about this? Is it appropriate to continue to see one counsellor over the school breaks to stay in contact in case I return to the city, while simultaneously seeing a counsellor at school? If it is, should I inform both of them? If you could provide some insight about this it would be very much appreciated.

A:

I don’t see a problem with having a counselor at home and another counselor at school. It’s like having a two physicians who provides medical care in two different cities. The key is informing each counselor of your current treatment program. They may want to communicate with each other regarding your case…but that’s your decision. If your counselors have different opinions or recommendations, that may be a problem. This doesn’t sound like a problem and is actually a good way to maintain your counseling support while away from home during the school year.
