Reader’s Question

Q:

When my little girl gets terrible tantrums I have to play Rob Zombie music to get her to calm down. This calms her and puts her to sleep. This started before she was born when she would get really active I would play this and she would slow down. Why does just that music calm her? I was just wondering because it is such a loud type of music. Thank you.

Our Clinical Psychologist’s Reply

A:

Rob Zombie music (also White Zombie) probably overwhelms her senses with both music and the vibration — prompting her to shut down her tantrum. When we think about it, loud music also contains loud vibrations that might be calming to her, much like riding in an automobile puts children to sleep. I can’t really recommend the technique as it’s close to screaming at someone until they shut up. However, as you’ve found, parents develop a variety of methods to deal with tantrums, sleep problems, etc. I always played Jim Croce songs but I often fell asleep before my daughters in that situation. Don’t be surprised if she likes horror films when she gets older.
