Depressed Teen: What Do I Do?
Clinical psychologist Dr Joseph M Carver, PhD, offers replies to reader questions submitted anonymously to Ask the Psychologist.
Reader’s Question
Hi, I’m 15 and have a few questions about depression. I feel that I suffer from depression and have a great fear of seeking help. I feel that if I ask someone they will just say I’m trying to get attention and not take me seriously. I’ve resolved to self harm, drinking, and drug use. I’m afraid if I continue my parents will find out and I don’t know what will happen. They already heard rumors that I am a drug user and I told them it wasn’t true; I don’t know if that will work next time. Can you please help me find a way to help?
Our Consulting Clinical Psychologist’s Reply
First, read and study about depression. You’ll find that many people self-treat with drugs, alcohol, and harmful behavior. Second, stop behaviors that will make your situation worse — alcohol, drugs, and self-harm. The real danger in these behaviors is that they will be discovered — then you are viewed as a drug abuser, cutter, alcohol abuser, etc. The fact that you are depressed will be totally missed as everyone will focus on your behavior — not your depression.
Third, seek the support of a trusted adult. This may be a guidance counselor, minister, teacher, etc. Lastly, after you have your homework completed (study of depression), I’d have a meeting with your parents. Keep in mind, that they will most likely be relieved that the problem is not alcohol or drug abuse. Depression is easier to treat.
