Effexor Gives Me Stomach Problems

Reader’s Question
I have been taking Effexor for about 3 weeks. I see no improvement, and if anything I am worse. I get very stomach sick, almost to the point of throwing up. What should I expect? Is this normal?

Most antidepressants require several weeks before improvement is noticed. Antidepressants work by changing levels of a neurotransmitter known as Serotonin. That same neurotransmitter is also located in the gastrointestinal tract — producing the upset stomach and other bowel problems. You should have adjusted to the side effects by now and for that reason, I would recommend you contact your physician. You may be better suited for another antidepressant. About 35% of folks need to switch antidepressant medications during the course of treatment so this is not unusual.
