I was wondering if you could recommend a psychologist or psychiatrist that specializes in borderline personality disorder in the Sarasota, FL area?

I don’t have any referrals in the Sarasota, Florida area. I’ve been through that region several times…very beautiful.

Anyway, there are several ways to find a good psychologist and/or psychiatrist. Best is the professional reference approach. You can ask your family physician for a referral, as the family MD is typically the community gatekeeper for medical/treatment services. They tend to know who’s good and who’s not so good.

Another approach is the specific-treatment method. You’ll find that Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is recommended for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). From that point, review the Yellow Pages and consider anyone who emphasizes DBT and/or BPD in their clinical practice.

One additional source of treatment may be the local universities, especially those with graduate schools in psychology and psychiatry. Most offer mental health clinics as part of their student training program. They tend to be knowledgeable about the latest treatments and strategies for various conditions.

A caution however. Not all therapists are trained the same or have identical personalities. It’s important to find a therapist that’s a “good fit” for your situation and personality. Make sure their treatment approach makes sense to you. If not, it’s best to consider another therapist.
