Reader’s Question

Q:

Dear folks,

Are you aware of any counselors with specific AvPD experience in the SE Michigan (Ann Arbor or north) area?

After reading extensively, I am 99% certain I have a spouse who is a codependent avoidant, with hypersensitivity and low self-esteem. The hypothesized developmental factor is maternal rejection.

I would like counseling to understand how to best deal with this situation.

Thank you,
Concerned spouse

A:

Most psychologists and psychiatric counselors & social workers have experience in Avoidant Personality Disorder. To find someone in your specific area, you might ask your family physician. Family physicians often have a good idea on who can treat what in the community.

Living in southern Ohio, I only meet Michigan folks at the Ohio State game. Don’t know of any professionals in your area.
